WVU Wins Twice to Open Mountaineer Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (5-6) opened its home slate with a 3-0 win over Merrimack College (2-7) in its first match at the Mountaineer Invitational. The Mountaineers followed their first match of Thursday's doubleheader with a 3-1 victory against Binghamton (7-4).
WVU started the invitational strong, sweeping the Warriors by scores of 25-12, 25-8 and 25-13, respectively.
Freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller led the match with 14.5 points. Miller also led the way with five service aces, a career-high for the Quinlan, Texas, native.
Freshman middle blocker Melanie McGann and Miller tallied nine kills each, good to lead the match.
Redshirt freshman setter Kamiah Gibson racked up 18 assists to lead the Mountaineers, while freshman setter Jessica Dunn earned her first collegiate appearance, notching 11 assists.
Freshman outside hitter Quincy Coyle and freshman middle blocker Tierney Jackson teamed up to be the match leaders for blocks, tallying three blocks each.
Additionally, West Virginia recorded 38 kills, 13 service aces and 55 points in the victory. WVU now leads the series against Merrimack, 1-0.
In the final match of the day, WVU got out to an early lead, taking the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22, respectively.
Binghamton took the third set, but the Mountaineers bounced back with force, taking set four 25-12.
Gibson set a career-high in assists (49) and in digs (12). She also combined with Jackson and McGann to lead the Mountaineers with three blocks a piece. This marks Gibson's first collegiate double-double.
Junior libero Skye Stokes set her season-high in service aces (4), while leading the Mountaineers in digs (25).
Fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell notched 17 kills. Additionally, Miller tallied 17 kills and 12 digs, good for her third double-double of the season.
The squad notched 62 kills, nine service aces and 72 digs against the Bearcats. WVU now leads the all-time record against Binghamton, 3-0.
WVU closes out the invitational with a match against Delaware State on Friday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. ET, at the WVU Coliseum. Live streams and live stats for the matches can be found on WVUSports.com.
