West Virginia Sweeps the Mountaineer Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-6) defeated Delaware State (10-3), on Friday night, to complete the three-match sweep at the Mountaineer Invitational.
WVU struck first, taking the opening set 25-20.
The first set was followed by two back-and-forth sets that saw the Mountaineers fall 25-21 and 25-22, respectively.
West Virginia continued to fight for the invitational sweep, taking set four 25-15. The Mountaineers never looked back, winning set five, 15-10.
Freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller notched 18 kills to lead the match. The Quinlan, Texas, native also tallied 13 digs, good for her fourth double-double of the campaign. Her efforts earned her MVP of the Mountaineer Invitational.
Fifth-year outside hitter Adrian Ell earned 17 kills to go with her 13 assists and 11 digs. This marks her first triple-double of the season. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native was awarded all-tournament honors for her performances.
Junior libero Skye Stokes lead West Virginia in digs, tallying 20 in the finale. Freshman defensive specialist/libero Jordyn Schilling followed with 13 digs of her own.
Redshirt freshman setter Kamiah Gibson racked up 37 assists to lead West Virginia. She also registered two service aces.
Freshman middle blocker/outside hitter Tierney Jackson also earned all-tournament honors. She notched 25 kills, seven blocks and 29 points throughout the invitational.
Additionally, West Virginia recorded 61 kills and 69 digs against the Hornets.
Up next, WVU opens Big 12 play, as it welcomes Texas Tech to Morgantown. First serve against the Red Raiders is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. ET. The Big 12 opener is a gold rush, and tickets can be purchased by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the Coliseum.
