Box Score ROUND ROCK, Texas – The No. 4-seed West Virginia University women's soccer team advanced to the Big 12 Championship Final after earning a hard-fought, 1-0 win over No. 1-seed Texas in the semifinals at Round Rock Multipurpose Complex on Thursday afternoon in Round Rock, Texas.
Fifth-year senior forward
Lauren Segalla's fifth goal of the season was the difference, as the Mountaineers (9-4-7) rode a 1-0 lead into the locker room and held the difference until the final buzzer. West Virginia's attack never let up the whole game, as it dominated possession and played keep-away from the Longhorns (14-2-4) to run out time on the clock.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute, when Segalla took a pass from sophomore forward
Leah Sparacio and pushed a ball past the Texas keeper. Her shot made it into the net, and the score stood from there, despite Texas taking seven shots in the second half. As usual, senior goalkeeper came up huge for West Virginia down the stretch, making three big saves in the final 45 minutes to save the win and the shutout.
Despite the score line, UT led the way in shots, 12-7, and shots on goal, 5-3. West Virginia earned four corner kicks, all in the first half, while Texas tallied five, four of which came in the second half. Massey notched five saves, earning her eighth shutout of the campaign.
Segalla's game-winning goal was her 10th game winner of her Mountaineer career, as well as her 21st career goal. The Salisbury, Connecticut, native also led the offense in shots, taking three total shots and placing a pair on goal.
With the win, the Mountaineers' advantage in the all-time series with the Longhorns moves to 10-3-3, including 2-0-2 in matchups in the Big 12 Tournament. West Virginia is set to make its fifth appearance in the Big 12 Finals, as it is on the hunt for its 10th overall conference title. Of note, the Mountaineers have never lost in the finals of the Big 12 Championship.
WVU now awaits the winner of Thursday's second semifinal and will meet either No. 2-seed TCU or No. 6-seed Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Final on Sunday, Nov. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, at Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas, and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
