
West Virginia Picks Up Win No. 9 at Army

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team picked up its ninth victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountaineers defeated No. 14 Army, 4725-4649, at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, New York.
West Virginia (9-1, 4-0 GARC) claimed both match disciplines, with a 2347 in smallbore and a 2378 in air rifle. Army shot a 2307 in smallbore and a 2342 in air rifle.
The Mountaineers claimed the top nine spots on the individual leaderboard. WVU was led by junior Matt Sanchez, who tied his career high in aggregate score (1183) and set a new career high in smallbore (588). The Tampa, Florida, native also finished with a 595 in air rifle.
Senior Malori Brown and fifth-year senior Verena Zaisberger checked in behind Sanchez and each shot an 1182 overall. Brown tallied a 587 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle, while Zaisberger showed a 585 in smallbore and a match-high 597 in air rifle.
Behind those two, junior Molly McGhin and senior Akihito Shimizu each shot an aggregate total of 1181. McGhin posted a 587 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle, and Shimizu finished with a match-high 589 in smallbore and a 592 in air rifle.
Sophomore Natalie Perrin and senior Calista Smoyer both finished with an 1180 overall, and each of them shot a 585 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
Junior Tal Engler checked in at No. 8 on the individual leaderboard, with an aggregate total of 1178. The Tzur Yigal, Israel, native tallied a 584 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle.
Rounding out the scores for West Virginia was junior Becca Lamb, who shot an 1174 overall and checked in at No. 9 on the match leaderboard. The Centreville, Virginia, native showed a 583 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle.
Next up, West Virginia returns to Morgantown on Friday, Nov. 18, to wrap up its fall season against NC State. The contest against the Wolfpack is set for 9 a.m. ET, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
