MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After setting a new course record at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park with a 5k time of 16:23.9, redshirt junior Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

McCabe defended her crown at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic in Louisville, Kentucky with emphasis by winning the race and setting a new 5k course record. The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native made a statement with her first race of the season, thrashing the previous course record of 16:26.7.

McCabe looks to continue her momentum from last week, as the cross country team heads to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8. The race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET.

This Week in Women's Soccer: The Mountaineers return to the road this week, as they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to battle No. 9 TCU on Thursday, Oct. 6 … the match is slated for 8 p.m. ET, at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: West Virginia battled back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Kansas at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Sept. 30 … after ta scoreless in the first half, the visiting Jayhawks took a 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of goals within a minute of one another … however, the Mountaineers (4-3-5, 1-0-2 Big 12) didn't let the KU spark get the best of them, as they fought back with two goals of their own in order to equalize by the 75th-minute mark … junior midfielder AJ Rodriguez brought West Virginia within one in the 62nd minute, before senior midfielder Maya McCutcheon notched her second equalizer of the year at 74:15 … the final box score showed West Virginia taking 18 shots and placing 11 shots on goal, while the Jayhawks took 12 shots and placed four on target … Rodriguez paced the offense with four shots, while McCutcheon placed all three of her attempted shots on frame.

Notes: Rodriguez scored her fourth career goal and second of the season against KU, as McCutcheon also tallied her second of the year … the goal was the Murphy, Texas, native's sixth of her career … with the draw, West Virginia's all-time series advantage over KU moved to 8-3-2, including 3-1-1 in games played in Morgantown … senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey continues to lead the Big 12 Conference and rank No. 16 nationally with six shutouts on the year … the Ottawa, Ontario, native also ranks second in the league in save percentage (0.816) and goals against average (0.850) … fifth-year senior defender Jordan Brewster currently ranks third all-time in program history with 91 career starts, surpassing Kadeisha Buchanan for third place outright … the North Canton, Ohio, native needs four more starts to tie the program record of 95, set by Sh'Nia Gordon (2015-18).

This Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers return to the road to take on Sun Belt Conference foe Old Dominion on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Norfolk, Virginia … kickoff at ODU Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: West Virginia (2-6-2, 0-1-2 Sun Belt) fell at No. 19 Dayton, (8-0-1, 2-0-1 Atlantic 10), on Sept. 27, before it played South Carolina to a 0-0 draw at home on Oct. 1 … in the squad's third straight road match against a top-25 opponent, the Flyers scored two goals in a 31-second span in the 14th and 15th minutes to take an early lead against WVU … the Mountaineers cut the lead in half with an 82nd-minute goal from senior forward Joseph Biafora, the first of his career, but it couldn't find a late equalizer … against the Gamecocks, WVU held an 11-5 advantage in shots, including 9-2 in the second half.

Notes: WVU is 3-1-2 against Old Dominion, including 3-1 on the road … the Mountaineers last played the Monarchs on Sept. 12, 2010 … following last week's action, West Virginia is now 3-2 all-time against Dayton and 0-1-1 against South Carolina … of note, WVU and USC played for the first time in 40 years last weekend … West Virginia is now unbeaten in 17 of its last 18 matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, dating back to March 24, 2021 … the clean sheet against the Gamecocks was WVU's third of the year … Biafora's goal against Dayton was the first for the Mountaineers by a Morgantown native since Mike Myers on Oct. 14, 2000, against Radford… WVU's 10 goals have come from seven different goal scorers this season.

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia returns to Morgantown to face Kansas State and Baylor in a pair of home matches … WVU welcomes Kansas State on Wednesday, Oct. 5, for Luau Night … first serve at the WVU Coliseum is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET … the Mountaineers then meet Baylor for the annual Pink Match, beginning at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Last Week in Volleyball: WVU (6-9, 0-3 Big 12) opened its Big 12 Conference road slate when it traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on TCU on Sept. 29 … the Mountaineers fought hard, taking sets two and three 25-22 and 25-19, respectively … the hard-fought battle ended in favor of the Horned Frogs in five sets … freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller earned her sixth double-double of the campaign, tallying 15 kills and 13 digs … her 15 kills and 18 points were good to lead West Virginia … freshman libero Jordyn Schilling racked up 25 digs, good for her collegiate-best … the Mountaineers then headed to Norman, Oklahoma, for a match against the Sooners on Saturday, Oct. 1… West Virginia fell in three sets … redshirt freshman setter Kamiah Gibson led the squad with 28 assists.

Notes: With 11.42 opponent kills per set, the Mountaineers rank second in the Big 12 … West Virginia also ranks third in the Big 12 in opponent assists per set (10.71) … additionally, WVU ranks fourth in the Big 12 in service aces per set (1.56) and opponent service aces per set (1.15) … through 15 matches, fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell ranks eighth in the Big 12 in points per set (3.78), ninth in service aces per set (0.30) and 10th in kills per set (3.09) … junior libero Skye Stokes is sixth in the Big 12 with 3.62 digs per set … Gibson ranks eighth in the Big 12 in assists per set with 7.21, while Miller is eighth in the conference with 0.31 service aces per set.

This Week in Tennis: WVU sends doubles pair Camilla Bossi and Ting-Pei Chang to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championships on Oct. 5, in Cary, North Carolina ... West Virginia then plays host to its annual Martha Thorn Invitational on Oct. 7-9 ... the Mountaineers welcome Duquesne, Louisville, Penn State and James Madison to Morgantown for the three-day tournament.

Notes: Bossi and Chang made their debut on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason rankings tied for No. 37 ... this marks a program first for the Mountaineers ... the tandem's appearance at the ITA Women's All-American Championships notches another first for WVU women's tennis ... following the invitational, the squad travels to Blacksburg, Virginia, for ITA Regionals on Oct. 20-23.

This Week in Swimming & Diving: West Virginia is off this week ... the Mountaineers return to action on Oct. 14-15, as they play host to the 11th annual West Virginia State Games ... each day prelims will start at 10 a.m. ET, while finals are set for a 6 p.m. start at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.

Last Week in Swimming & Diving: WVU had its annual intrasquad Gold-Blue Meet on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park ... the Blue team came out victorious with a 231-212 win over Gold.

Notes: WVU is set to host seven home events during the 2022-23 slate, including the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships for the second time since 2020 ... following the State Games, the Mountaineers welcome soon-to-be Big 12 Conference member Cincinnati to Morgantown, on Oct. 21-22, for their first dual meet of the season ... WVU will send qualifying swimmers to compete in USA Swimming's 2022 Toyota U.S. Open from Nov. 30-Dec. 3, in Greensboro, North Carolina ... Texas will play host to this year's Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships, from Feb. 22-25.

This Week in Rifle: No. 6 West Virginia (1-0, 1-0 GARC) welcomes No. 5 Ole Miss to Morgantown on Saturday, Oct. 8 … Saturday's contest against the Rebels is set for 9 a.m. ET, and will be held at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.

Last Week in Rifle: West Virginia defeated No. 14 Memphis, 4712-4645, on Oct. 1, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range in Morgantown, to open the season … the Mountaineers claimed both disciplines in the match, winning smallbore by a score of 2337-2291, and air rifle, 2375-2354 … WVU was led by senior Mary Tucker, who made her Mountaineer debut in the victory … the Sarasota, Florida, native topped all three leaderboards in the match, with a 587 in smallbore, a 597 in air rifle and an 1184 aggregate score … of note, WVU is now 16-2 all-time against UM.

Notes: With the win over Memphis, the Mountaineers have now won 17 consecutive season openers, dating back to 2007, when coach Jon Hammond took over the program … West Virginia is 19-3 all-time against Ole Miss, with the series beginning in 2002 … last year, WVU opened the season against Ole Miss and defeated the then-No. 2 Rebels, 4733-4683, on Oct. 2, 2021, in Oxford, Mississippi … of note, Ole Miss is led by coach Marsha Beasley, who coached WVU from 1990-2006, and won eight NCAA titles … Beasley was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 17 … as a team, West Virginia ranks No. 3 nationally in aggregate score (4712), smallbore score (2337) and air rifle score (2375) … individually, Tucker is No. 6 in the nation in aggregate score (1184), No. 7 in air rifle score (597) and No. 10 in smallbore score.

This Week in Cross Country: West Virginia continues the 2022 campaign with the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa. … the women's 6k begins at 11 a.m. ET… the meet takes place at Schenley Park.

Last Week in Cross Country: WVU competed at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic, finishing second as a team … redshirt junior Ceili McCabe defended her first place finish from last year's meet at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., with emphasis, setting a new course record and taking first for the second consecutive year… McCabe finished the 5k in 16:23.9 … sixth-ear senior Mikaela Lucki followed McCabe with Lucki's career-best time of 16:50.2, earning fourth place … additionally, redshirt junior Katherine Dowie made her season debut, finishing 14th with a time of 17:03.3 … redshirt senior Charlotte Wood and redshirt senior Jeanne Reix Charat each set a new career best, with times of 17:13. 7 and 17:36.9 and finishing 27th and 48th, respectively… West Virginia was one of 44 schools racing in the women's 5k, with a total of 388 runners.

Notes: McCabe has now won the meet at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, which is hosted by the University of Louisville for two years running … The course record previously was 16:26.7 … the Mountaineers rank fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region … the 16:23.9 also was a personal-best for McCabe.
