Life as a Mountaineer – Katherine Dowie

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Victoria, Australia native Katherine Dowie recently completed her junior season at West Virginia University.
From the little town of Carisbrook, about a two-hour drive north of Melbourne, Dowie said she fell in love with Morgantown because it reminded her so much of home.
"I was recruited by a lot of schools and WVU was the one I chose because of the coach and just the town stuff," she says. "It's not too big and I just enjoyed the experiences I had with coaching and stuff like that.
"I really like the landscape and the nature is really nice. I like being surrounded by all of the mountains," she adds. "The mountains are really different than where I'm from. It's much flatter so I really like this."
Dowie recently placed fifth in the steeplechase at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships after posting an 11th-place finish in the 3K during the indoor championships earlier this spring.
"I like the longer distances on the track like the 3K and the 5K, and I do the steeplechase," she says.
Dowie says the pandemic has forced her to remain in the States for much of the last two years, but she hopes to return home to see her family sometime this summer.
"I was able to go home for a little bit last summer so that was really good," she says. "That's been challenging, but I really love it here and there is so much to do around Morgantown and outside of Morgantown. I'm excited to visit more of the country and travel a bit."
Dowie is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team choice who is currently majoring in exercise physiology.
This week's Life as a Mountaineer was produced by Megan Crain and is presented by WVU Medicine.
