Wolf Strikes Out 11 Sooners in Friday Win

Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf tied his career high with 11 strikeouts in the West Virginia University baseball team's 7-1 win over Oklahoma on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown.

Wolf was dominant all evening, allowing just one unearned run on three hits with one walk in 7.0 innings of work. The Gahanna, Ohio, native earned the win on the mound, his fourth of the year.

The Mountaineers (17-21, 7-12 Big 12) scored four runs in the first inning to build a lead in Friday's series opener. In all, WVU finished with seven runs on seven hits with two errors, while the Sooners (22-22, 6-10 Big 12) tallied one run on three hits with one error.

OU's Wyatt Olds took the loss.

After Wolf delivered a 1-2-3 top of the first, WVU struck for four runs in the bottom half, thanks to a pair of home runs in a variety of ways. First, catcher/outfielder Paul McIntosh gave West Virginia a 1-0 lead with a solo shot to left center, before freshman infielder/right-handed pitcher Nathan Blasick tallied a three-run, inside-the-park homer later in the frame.

The Mountaineers totaled four runs on three hits in the inning, all with two outs.

WVU plated two more in the second to extend the lead to 6-0. Sophomore catcher/infielder Matt McCormick drilled an RBI ground-rule double and fifth-year senior first baseman/outfielder Hudson Byorick recorded an RBI infield single to stretch the advantage.

From there, Wolf did the rest. After OU scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1, the Mountaineer left-hander retired 10 in a row from the fourth to the seventh. He became the first Mountaineer pitcher to register 10 or more strikeouts in three consecutive starts since Alek Manoah from April 5-20, 2019. Wolf threw 117 pitches, including 80 strikes.

WVU's final run of the night came in the bottom of the seventh when McIntosh scored on a wild pitch.

McIntosh finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the win, while Byorick also chipped in with a pair of hits. Additionally, Blasick's three RBI paced the club in the win.

Following Wolf's exit, redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Noah Short pitched two, clean innings in relief. He retired all six batters his faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

With the win, the Mountaineers improved to 12-14 all-time against Oklahoma, including 7-7 at home. The victory also evened WVU's home record to 10-10 on the year.

Next up, West Virginia and Oklahoma conclude the three-game set on Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m. ET. Game 2 will begin approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 1.

Sunday's regularly-scheduled series finale was moved up due to inclement weather projected in the Morgantown area.
