West Virginia Plays to Draw at KSU

Box Score MANHATTAN, Kan. – In its first road match of the Big 12 slate, the No. 9-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Kansas State, at Buser Family Park in Manhattan, Kansas, on Thursday night.

The Mountaineers (8-2-2, 2-0-1 Big 12) were on the board early, with an eighth-minute score from sophomore midfielder Lilly McCarthy, her second goal in as many games. However, WVU allowed a KSU tally just 10 minutes later, and the final score stood from there, despite West Virginia's 10 shots on goal throughout the 110-minute match.

"It was a very hard-fought game tonight, but unfortunately we couldn't find the back of the net for that second score," WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "I thought that in the second half and in both overtimes, we were really able to control the ball better, but unfortunately we couldn't get the result we wanted."

The Mountaineers didn't waste much time before finding the back of the net. In the eighth minute, senior defender Jordan Brewster took a corner kick and delivered it to the far post, where it was headed to the center by senior forward Lauren Segalla. Segalla's ball found several players in the middle, but in the Wildcats' attempt to clear it, they found an open McCarthy. The Owings Mill, Maryland, native connected and sent the ball into the the net to put WVU up early.

However, K-State drew level just 10 minutes later, as KSU forward Kyler Goins made it onto a long ball and edged the shot just above the hands of junior goalkeeper Kayza Massey. The two teams continued to play back-and-forth for the rest of the half, with the WVU defense forced to fend off a determined Kansas State attack. Freshman forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran and junior defender Gabrielle Robinson added a shot on frame apiece, but the teams went to the half tied at 1-1.

Out of the intermission, Segalla tallied a pair of shots on target before the 50-minute mark, but both were saved by KSU keeper Alaina Werremeyer. West Virginia's next big opportunity came on a ball from junior midfielder Maya McCutcheon. Heredia-Beltran nearly got a foot on the rebound, but Werremeyer fell on top of it and the match went on. The remainder of regulation became a defensive battle, with neither team finding a score as the match went into overtime.

In the first overtime period, West Virginia showed the offensive front it's known for and dominated possession for the majority of the 10 minutes. The Mountaineers had a promising free-kick opportunity just above the 18', but there was nothing on the end of it and the contest went to double OT. The second 10-minute overtime saw a pair of shots from both teams, but the match ultimately ended in a 1-1 draw.

Thursday's contest showed another dominating statistical performance from the Mountaineers, as the squad tallied 17 shots, including 10 on frame, compared to K-State's eight shots with three on goal. WVU created eight corner-kick opportunities, while the West Virginia defense once again didn't allow its opponent to record a single corner for the second straight contest.

With the draw, the Mountaineers move to 4-0-1 all-time against the Wildcats, including 2-0-1 in Manhattan. West Virginia is now 6-1-3 in Big 12 road openers, as well as 63-9-6 all-time in Big 12 Conference play. Additionally, Thursday night's overtime match with K-State marked West Virginia's first since a 0-0, double overtime draw with then-No. 23 Georgetown on Sept. 9.

The Mountaineers continue their two-game road swing through the Sunflower State on Sunday, Oct. 10, as they travel to Lawrence, for a match against Kansas. Kickoff against the Jayhawks is tabbed for 2 p.m. ET, at KU's Rock Chalk Park.
