Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team allowed Oklahoma State to score a pair of unanswered goals to earn a 2-1 victory in overtime at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Thursday night.
Senior midfielder
Isabella Sibley put the Mountaineers (9-5-4, 3-3-3 Big 12) on the board in the 11th minute, but WVU allowed OSU to answer with scores in the 53rd and 92nd minutes for the come-from-behind win. The Cowgirls knotted the game at 1-1 before battling WVU into OT, where they were able to score the golden goal and take home the win.
"Unfortunately we couldn't get a result for our seniors tonight," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "This one was a heartbreaker. We had so many chances that we couldn't finish in the first half, and it just came back to haunt us."
Sibley opened the scoring early, as the Uxbridge, England, native used a rebound off the OSU defense to find the back of the net. Senior defender
Jordan Brewster took a free kick from about 5 yards off the touchline, sending it in and finding a Cowgirl first, whose attempt to bat it away went toward keeper Evie Vitali. The rebound ball found Sibley, who used an open look to put WVU on the board first.
Soon after, West Virginia got another good look when junior forward/defender
Julianne Vallerand took a shot from 20-yards out and hit it off the crossbar. Junior midfielder
Maya McCutcheon took hold of the rebound, but her ensuing shot went wide for the Oklahoma State goal kick. Aside from that, the half was a defensive battle, as the only shot on goal was Sibley's score.
Out of the half, it was much of the same, with the two defenses fending off the opposite attacks. However, the Cowgirls drew even in the 53rd minute when OSU's Hannah Webb shot a trio of balls toward junior goalkeeper
Kayza Massey. WVU's star keeper got her hands on the first two, but the third found its way past the goal line.
Following the OSU goal, the Mountaineers appeared to be playing from behind, despite the score being knotted at one goal apiece. Each time WVU appeared to be creating an opportunity to score, the chance was shut down by the Cowgirl defense. In the 75th minute, freshman forward Dilary Heredia Beltran and McCutcheon each took a shot at goal from well outside the 18-yard box, but both chances were halted by Vitali. West Virginia tallied two more shots on frame before the end of regulation, but neither made it into the net, and the game went to extra time.
It didn't take long for OSU to strike in overtime. One minute into the period, the Cowgirls won a 50/50 ball in midfield and set up a perfect opportunity from the spot for the game-ending, go-ahead score.
In the final stats, WVU edged Oklahoma State in nearly every category, including 11-10 in shots, 5-4 in shots on goal and 2-1 in corner kicks. Massey made a pair of saves in the match, and OSU's Vitali stopped four Mountaineer opportunities. McCutcheon led the West Virginia offense with three shots, while Heredia-Beltran placed a pair on target.
With the loss, WVU's all-time lead over the Cowgirls drops to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in games played in Morgantown. The Mountaineers are now 30-21-60 all-time in overtime matches, as well as 0-2-4 this season. Thursday's match against Oklahoma State marked the regular-season finale for West Virginia, as it finished 9-5-4 on the year, along with a 3-3-3 mark in conference play.
Following the contest, the squad honored four of its senior members –
Jordan Brewster,
Isabella Sibley,
Lauren Segalla and
Grace Smith – for their contributions to the team during their time in Morgantown.
"These are just really awesome seniors," Izzo-Brown added. "I'm so proud of them, and I'm thankful for everything that they've brought to the program in the last four years."
