Mountaineers Head to Big 12 Championship

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for the 2021 Big 12 Championships, on Friday, Oct. 29, at the OSU Cross Country Course. The race is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET.

"We are going into the Big 12 Championship with the same roster that ran at Wisconsin," said coach Sean Cleary. "We have a few spots we are adjusting. We need to tighten up the pack and we will be rewarded with a good performance. Some of the group has had experience on the course. We ran the NCAA Championships there last year."
At the 2020 Big 12 Championship, the Mountaineers collected three All-Big 12 Honors, while the team finished in third place. Kansas hosted the Championship in Lawrence at Rim Rock Farm.
Then-sophomore Ceili McCabe led the charge for WVU, crossing the Rim Rock Farm finish line in a 6k time of 20:55.9, placing fourth. She was followed by then-redshirt sophomore Katherine Dowie, who also placed inside the top 10, collecting 10th with a time of 21:25.4
Then-junior Charlotte Wood finished in 11th place with a time of 21:27.5 to collect All-Big 12 honors after finishing inside the top-15.
WVU last ran on the OSU Cross Country Course at the 2020 NCAA Championships. The squad placed 29th overall. McCabe was the first Mountaineer to finish the 6k race and did so in a time of 21:01.2. Dowie was the second Mountaineer to cross the finish line. She finished in 150th place in a time of 21:51.7.
WVU's best finish at the Big 12 Championship came when the Mountaineers finished second as a team in 2013 and 2014. The team is seeking its third conference championship in program history, after previously collecting the Big East Championship in 2007 and the Atlantic 10 title in 1994.
West Virginia's last individual conference champion was former All-American Marie Louise Asselin, who finished first in the Big East Championship in 2008. In 1991, Vicki Sum won the Atlantic 10 Championship race.
West Virginia closed out its regular season at the Nuttycombe Invitational, on Friday, Oct. 15, in Madison, Wisconsin. Six Mountaineers competed at the event, including junior McCabe, who led the team with a first-place finish in a 6K time of 19:57.4.
Additionally, junior Dowie, junior Mikaela Lucki, fifth-year senior Sylvia Russell, fifth-year senior Hayley Jackson, sophomore Maria Kaylor also competed.
