Mountaineers Open Fall Slate with Home Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team opened its 2021 fall schedule with a 15-11 win over Marshall on Friday night at Wagener Field at Monongalia County Ballpark.
In front of a crowd of nearly 900 fans, six different Mountaineers recorded multiple hits on the night, including junior outfielder/left-handed pitcher Kevin Dowdell, who finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and four RBI. The Montevallo, Alabama, native socked a three-run shot over the right-field wall in the bottom of the fourth to give WVU a 6-2 lead.
Junior outfielder Victor Scott II and freshman infielder Jimmy Sadler each recorded a pair of RBI for the hosts, while senior outfielder Austin Davis finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Freshman infielder Tyler Cox chipped in with a 3-for-4 effort at the dish, scoring three times while also registering a double and RBI.
WVU's biggest inning of the evening came in the bottom of the sixth when it put four runs on the board to take a 10-4 lead. Dowdell and redshirt junior catcher/infielder Dayne Leonard sparked the frame with a pair of RBI singles, before a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly by freshman infielder Alex Khan capped the inning.
On the mound, the Mountaineers used eight different pitchers, including WVU debutants Trey Braithwaite and Chase Smith, two fifth-year senior right-handers who each came out of the bullpen.
West Virginia returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 17, when the squad travels to take on Kent State in exhibition play in Kent, Ohio.
