MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University standout Ryan McBroom is developing into one of the best pinch hitters in Major League Baseball.
The second-year player for the Kansas City Royals recently established a club record for the most pinch-hit home runs in a season and a career with his third pinch-hit dinger off Zack Burdi Saturday night in a 9-6 Royals victory over the Chicago White Sox.
His three pinch-hit home runs during an amazing 18-day span is the highest single-month total by an American League player since 1953, according to the Kansas City Star. He also recorded a pinch hit in three consecutive games from Aug. 26-29, becoming the first American League player to accomplish the feat since Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero in 2009.
"I don't know if we give enough credit, how hard that is to do – to come into the game mid-stream like that and then coming off a righty too," Royals manager Mike Metheny told the Kansas City Star. "He did another incredible job."
"I don't know if there is a secret to be honest," McBroom added, "I haven't pinch hit a lot in my life."
McBroom is batting .321 with five home runs and 15 RBI in 25 games so far this season. In 48 career games, the Fredericksburg, Virginia, native is hitting .305 in 131 Major League at bats heading into this week's action.
