DMR Leads WVU on First Night at Akron

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team's distance medley relay team led the way with a second-place finish on the first night of competition at the Akron Invitational, inside the Stile Athletics Field House on Friday, in Akron, Ohio.
The team of redshirt junior Sarah Wills, redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah, sophomore Tessa Constantine and redshirt freshmen Amber Dombrowski crossed the finish line in the distance medley relay (gold division) in 12:06.45 to take second place.
The night opened with the women's pole vault competition (blue division). Sophomore Molly DeBone and freshman Katelyn Caccamo finished in a tie for sixth, reaching a mark of 3.53 meters (11 feet, seven inches). With the mark, Caccamo reached a new personal best in the event. Sophomore Julia Brundin also competed in the pole vault Friday night, finishing in 18th place with a jump of 3.23 meters (10 feet, seven inches).
In the women's long jump, freshman Erica Hegele represented WVU with a 12th-place finish after posting a mark of 5.08 meters (16 feet, eight inches). The distance is a new career best for Hegele, who reached a starting jump of 5.03m before jumping 5.08m on her second attempt.
The distance medley relay team's second-place finish in the gold division race concluded West Virginia's first night of competition. Dombrowski, Constantine, Wills, Abdalah and Lipps combined to finish in 12:06.45 to close the first session of the weekend.
The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow morning for the second day of competition at the Akron Invitational. Saturday's events begin at 10 a.m. ET, at Akron's Stile Athletics Field House.
