MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team concluded competition at the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship with a pair of podium finishes by redshirt sophomore Hayley Jackson on Saturday in Ames, Iowa
Jackson earned a silver medal after a second-place finish in the women's mile to lead the Mountaineers at Iowa State's Lied Recreation Center. The Lusby, Maryland, native crossed the finish line at 4:40.31, registering her second conference accolade of the weekend.
"Hayley (Jackson) had a sensational day," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "she ran within a few tenths of the fastest mile of her life to nab second in the mile, which is another big step forward for her."
Jackson reached the podium for the third time in the Big 12 Championship as she finished seventh in the 3,000-meter race with a season-best mark of 9:40.82.
Along with Jackson, five Mountaineers competed in the women's 3,000 meters on Saturday. Redshirt senior Candace Archer finished .28 seconds away from a podium finish as she crossed the line in 9:46.16 to place ninth. Redshirt sophomore Katherine Dowie logged a time of 9:13.72 to finish fifth in her heat and 13th overall. Redshirt junior Antigone Archer finished 19th overall in 9:54.36, while sophomore Samantha Hatcher took 23rd in 9:59.37. Redshirt freshman Hannah Lipps completed the event at 10:07.76 to place 30th.
In all, the Mountaineers registered a total of six podium finishes in eight events at the two-day championship meet.
"The 3,000-meter student-athletes had a very nice race. All six finished with lifetime and season-bests from this race alone," Cleary continued. "With six podium finishes in the Big 12 Championships and many other lifetime bests, we look to bring back a few more onto the team for the outdoor season to continue the progress,"
On Friday, Jackson helped West Virginia's distance medley relay team to a third-place, Bronze-medal finish. Sophomores Candace Archer and Tessa Constantine and freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden joined Jackson to claim the Mountaineers' second consecutive bronze medal in the event at the conference meet. The finish marked WVU's third medal in the distance medley relay after 2013 squad also earned a third-place finish in 2013.
The Mountaineers finished with 16 team points at the meet. Texas earned a total of 180.33 points earn its third-straight Big 12 women's indoor team championship.
WVU will now await the announcement of the Division I Indoor Track and Field Championship qualifiers, which is set to be released on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. ET. The two-day national meet will begin on Friday, March 13, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
