WVU Welcomes Pitt, Rutgers to Morgantown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team welcomes Pitt and Rutgers to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, March 1, with competition set to begin at 2 p.m.
It's the Wendy M. Roach Invitational, and fans are encouraged to Color the Coliseum for Cancer by wearing the color that represents the cancer advocacy of their choosing. Fans can get the WVU sports official tie-dye t-shirt with a donation of $10 or more to WVU Medicine. The Mountaineers will wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
"Cancer is something that effects so many people," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "It's an important event for us. Wendy Roach was an incredible lady. She unfortunately lost her battle with cancer a few years back. This event is to honor her, and it's a chance for fans to wear any color they want to help raise awareness for all types of cancer. It's important for us to come together and show our support."
Additionally, chuck-a-ducks will be available for purchase. Following the meet, fans can throw their ducks onto the floor exercise mat. The six closest ducks to the target will receive a prize.
The Mountaineer Maniac students also will receive a free giveaway item in honor of its annual "Maniacs Yard Sale" event, and Mr. Twister will be in attendance on the concourse.
Fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. All tickets are general admission. Tickets for WVU students are free with a valid student I.D.

West Virginia (10-6, 0-2 Big 12) is 65-15-2 against Pitt (5-6, 2-3 EAGL) and 57-0 against Rutgers (4-11, 0-9 Big Ten). WVU and Pitt will meet for the second time in as many weeks and the third time this season. The two teams have split its previous meetings, with West Virginia most recently topping Pitt, 194.925-194.575, on Feb. 21, in Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers and the Scarlet Knights last met in 2019, with WVU earning a 194.15-189.8 victory at the Cancun Classic on Jan. 4.
"These are two teams that are going to come in here looking for a victory," Butts said. "We're just looking forward to being at home with some great competition. We can't wait to show off what we have been working on this week in practice. Hopefully, we can get a season-high score as well. We really need that at this point, as we get ready for the final stretch before postseason. Hopefully, we'll have a big crowd come out and support us, and we can put on a good show."
West Virginia is 5-0 at the WVU Coliseum this season. Sunday also marks WVU's third tri-meet of the year, and the Mountaineers are 9-4 in multi-team meets.
West Virginia went 4-0 last weekend, earning a win at Pitt on Feb. 21 before finishing first in a quad meet at the WVU Coliseum on Feb. 23.
WVU captured a big win against Pitt, 194.925-194.575, at the Fitzgerald Field House, in Pittsburgh. The Mountaineers hit 23-for-24 routines and earned a 48.675-48.475 edge over the Panthers on vault, a 48.875-48.4 win on uneven bars and a 49.0-48.875 victory on floor exercise. Pitt claimed the balance beam win, 48.825-48.375.
WVU then used a season-high score on beam to sweep the competition with a 196.0 showing in the program's sixth Beauty and the Beast Meet. Western Michigan finished second overall with a 195.075 score, and Bowling Green placed third with a 194.225 mark. Towson totaled 193.425 and finished fourth. The Mountaineers nearly swept the event wins, finishing first on bars (48.875), beam (49.175) and floor (49.125). WVU also finished second on vault (48.825). The Broncos won vault with a score of 48.85.
WVU hit 24-for-24 routines in the quad meet and the team total was the Mountaineers' second-best score of the season.
This week's Road to Nationals Rankings were determined by National Qualifying Scores (NQS). WVU comes in at No. 32 with an NQS of 195.380. The Mountaineers rank as high as No. 30 on floor (49.010 NQS). WVU also ranks No. 31 on bars (48.860 NQS), No. 32 on vault (48.875 NQS) and No. 38 on beam (48.720 NQS).
Sophomore Kendra Combs paces the team with 223.975 season points, followed by senior Chloe Cluchey with 223.125. Freshman Kianna Yancey ranks third with 214.5 points, followed by classmate Abbie Pierson at No. 4 with 205.175 points.
All 16 Mountaineers have competed in at least one meet this season. Eleven of the 16 Mountaineers who have competed this season have reached the podium. Yancey paces WVU with 10 podium finishes, while Cluchey, Combs and Pierson show seven podium finishes apiece.
The Scarlet Knights show an overall NQS of 194.045 and rank as high as No. 31 on beam (48.820 NQS). Last week, Rutgers placed fifth at the Big Five meet on Feb. 21, in Toledo, Ohio. The Scarlet Knights scored a 193.625 and produced a school record on vault of 49.225.
The Panthers recorded a season-best team score of 196.0 in a dual meet at No. 21 Southern Utah on Feb. 24, in Cedar City, Utah. Despite the season-best score, the Panthers were edged by the Thunderbirds, 197.075-196.0. Senior Michael Burton is the EAGL's top performer on bars with an NQS of 9.845. She has earned the individual title for the event in six of the Panthers' eight meets this season, recording a team-best score of 9.9 against WVU on Feb. 21.
