MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team fell to Illinois, 2-1, at the Brittain Resorts Invitational at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Sunday afternoon.
In the squad's first of two games on the day, freshman left-handed pitcher Jake Carr threw a complete game in a tough-luck loss, allowing just two runs on five hits in 8.0 innings of work. The St. Albans, West Virginia, native struck out three and didn't issue a walk in 85 pitches.
Despite the setback, the Mountaineers outhit the Illini, 7-5.
West Virginia (5-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when redshirt senior outfielder Braden Zarbnisky and junior infielder Tyler Doanes registered base hits to open the ballgame. From there, junior catcher Paul McIntosh reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Zarbnisky to give the Mountaineers the early advantage.
Carr retired Illinois (3-3) in order in the first and third innings, before he allowed his first hit in the fourth. Then, the Illini hit a two-run homer to left, taking a 2-1 lead in the process.
Still, Carr battled, holding the Big Ten foe off the scoreboard for the rest of the day. The freshman, who made his second career start on Sunday, picked off a runner to end the fifth inning, and tallied another 1-2-3 frame in the sixth.
In the top of the eighth, Zarbnisky recorded a leadoff single, getting the tying run on base for the Mountaineers. However, he was caught stealing second to stunt the rally.
Carr's final inning of work in the eighth was another good one, as he forced three Illinois ground outs to give WVU a chance in the ninth. West Virginia, though, couldn't create the breakthrough, snapping its four-game win streak. The loss evened Carr's record to 1-1.
Zarbnisky went 4-for-4 with a run scored in the loss, while Doanes finished with two hits. Freshman outfielder Victor Scott also singled for WVU.
Next up, the Mountaineers travel to nearby Conway, South Carolina, to take on Coastal Carolina in the team's second game of its Sunday doubleheader. First pitch at Springs Brooks Stadium is set for 4 p.m. ET.
