MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team extended its season win streak to nine with a 4710-4652 win at No. 13 Ohio State on Saturday, held at the LT. Hugh W. Wylie Range, in Columbus, Ohio.
The Mountaineers (9-0, 7-0 GARC) defeated the Buckeyes (4-9, 0-1 PRC) in both disciplines, winning smallbore, 2334-2297, and air rifle, 2376-2355.
"I'm definitely pleased with our overall team performance," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "They approached the match well and worked really hard. We shot some really good smallbore today, though we could have been a little bit more discipline in standing. Although we didn't have any personal bests, our air rifle scores were pretty consistent as well."
Senior Milica Babic (195 kneeling, 199 prone, 192 standing) and junior Sarah Osborn (195 kneeling, 199 prone, 192 standing) each shot 586 and tied for first place overall in smallbore. Osborn matched her season high in the tie, which was last shot on Nov. 17, 2019.
Freshman Malori Brown finished in a tie for third with a 584 score. Senior Morgan Phillips and freshman Calista Smoyer tied for fifth with matching 582s. Of note, Smoyer posted a personal best in the tie.
Sophomore Verena Zaisberger shot a season-high 581 total and placed seventh, while junior David Koenders finished in eighth place with a 580.
Freshman Akihito Shimizu and sophomore Jared Eddy added marks of 577 and 571, respectively.
Additionally, a pair of Mountaineers matched the program's prone record on Saturday, as Brown and Koenders each shot 200.
Ariel Hall paced Ohio State with a 584 mark and tied Brown for third.
In air rifle, Koenders (100-100-99-100-100-98) and Zaisberger (100-100-100-99-99-99) tied for the discipline win with matching 597 marks. Of note, Koenders and Zaisberger each matched their season high in the tie.
Babic, Osborn and Shimizu each shot 593, good enough for a share of fourth place. Eddy shot 592 and tied for seventh, while Brown and Smoyer tied for ninth place with 587s. Phillips shot 586 and tied for 11th overall.
Rhiann Travis paced Ohio State and placed third with a 594 score.
Five Mountaineers counted toward the team's scores: Babic, Koenders, Osborn, Phillips and Shimizu.
With the win, WVU improves to 47-0 all-time against OSU.
"All-in-all, we're looking forward to a good week of practice," Hammond said. "We just have to take it one day at a time and continue to build on the things that we are doing well in."
Looking ahead, West Virginia closes its regular season at home vs. 2019 NCAA Qualifier Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 15. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building.
