Ferrer-vanGinkel Earns Second Big 12 Honor; WVU Jumps to No. 4

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the second time this season, senior midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel of the No. 4-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.

The Barcelona, Spain, native scored a pair of goals in the Mountaineers' 2-1 win over then-No. 11 Kansas on Oct. 30, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Ferrer-vanGinkel opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute, before she completed the brace with her second tally in the 16th minute. It marked her second career multi-goal performance and first since 2018.

Ferrer-vanGinkel finished the night with four shots, all of them on goal and helped WVU win its fifth consecutive contest. In all, she has found the back of the net in five of West Virginia's eight matches this season.

Ferrer-vanGinkel is the nation's leader in game-winning goals (4) and ranks No. 3 nationally in total goals (6), No. 6 in goals per game (.75), No. 8 in points per game (1.63) and No. 9 in total points (13). She sits No. 1 in the Big 12 in all of those categories.

The honor marks the second this season for the senior, who also was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 13. Additionally, she was named the Women's National Player of the Week by College Soccer News on Monday.

Along with Ferrer-vanGinkel, sophomore forward Enzi Broussard was selected to the Women's Team of the Week by TopDrawerSoccer.com. The Dallas, Texas, native assisted on both of Ferrer-vanGinkel's goals in WVU's win over Kansas.

West Virginia moved up two spots to No. 4 in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's National Poll, which also was released on Tuesday. WVU has now been ranked in the top 10 in all seven editions of the poll this season, including twice in the top five.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, only teams competing in the fall were considered for the poll. The number of teams appearing in each ranking is also lower due to the number of teams competing, resulting in a top-15 poll this season.

North Carolina (9-0) remains No. 1 this week, ahead of No. 2 Florida State (8-0), No. 3 TCU (7-0-1), West Virginia and No. 5 Clemson (6-3). Duke (6-3-2) ranks No. 6, while Arkansas (6-1), Texas A&M (5-1), South Carolina (6-1) and Virginia (7-2-1) rounded out the top 10.

Two more Big 12 programs were slotted into the top 15 this week, as Oklahoma State (5-2-1) sits at No. 11, while Kansas (4-3) is down one spot to No. 12.

The Mountaineers close the 2020 fall campaign on Friday, Nov. 6, against the third-ranked Horned Frogs. Kickoff at TCU's Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, is set for 8 p.m. ET, with the winner of the match claiming the Big 12 regular-season title. WVU, which has defeated a top-10 foe in 14 of the last 15 seasons, is vying for its first conference regular-season crown since 2016.
