MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team began its weekend at the Penn State National Open with one victory in the opening night of competition on Friday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Sophomore Myesha Nott led the way for West Virginia, securing a victory in the triple jump and grabbing the Mountaineers' first win of the competition. The distance medley relay team of redshirt sophomore Hayley Jackson, redshirt freshman Amber Dombrowski, redshirt freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden and redshirt junior Antigone Archer also recorded a top-five finish in second place.
"We had a few strong performances tonight on the track," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We mixed and matched a distance medley relay team that did a really nice job. Myesha showed more consistency tonight in her execution of what she has been working on in practice. Her jumping should continue to improve as the weeks roll by. Erica (Hegele) showed promise in her multi-event debut tonight. Both she and the coaching staff believe she has a future in this event, and we are pleased with her first go around."
Freshman Erica Hegele opened the night for the Mountaineers, competing in the women's pentathlon and finishing in fifth place. Hegele posted times of 9.29 in the 60-meter hurdles and 2:32.92 in the 800-meter run, along with distances of 1.36 meters in the high jump, 10.45 meters in the shot put and 4.92 meters in the long jump to take fifth.
In the unseeded pole vault competition, sophomore Molly DeBone tied for 13th after reaching a mark of 3.37 meters. Nott's victory in the triple jump was next, as she reached a distance of 12.42 meters to secure the victory. Jackson, Dombrowski, Vanderheyden and Archer then grabbed their second-place spot in the distance medley relay to close the night for the Mountaineers. The team combined to post a time of 11:40.52.
West Virginia is back in action tomorrow morning for the second day of competition at the PSU National Open. Action at Penn State's Ashenfelter Indoor Track is set to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
