MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a two-month break, the No. 2-ranked West Virginia University rifle team resumes competition against No. 11 Army on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Bill McKenzie Rifle Range inside the WVU Shell Building, in Morgantown.
The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. ET, and admission is free and open to the public.
The Mountaineers' spring season opener is a Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) match against familiar foes, as the Black Knights' head coach Web Wright led WVU to three NCAA titles (1986, 1988 and 1989).
WVU (7-0, 6-0 GARC) is 39-10 all-time against Army (2-3, 2-3 GARC). The Mountaineers emerged victorious last season, besting the Black Knights by a score of 4712-4658 in West Point, New York. WVU swept the board, winning smallbore, 2335-2307, and air rifle, 2377-2351.
West Virginia most recently concluded its fall season with a 4715-4655 win over Navy on Nov. 23, in Annapolis, Maryland. Following a holiday break, the team spent seven days training in Tokyo, Japan.
"It's always nice to have a break between the semesters," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "Obviously, we had an amazing trip to Japan. It was a wonderful experience, and it was a good chance to get back together and get some good training in.
"Now, we are back in the swing of things for the semester. It's going to be short, but I think we are ready to get back in there and compete, especially on our home range in the Shell. We got back to normalcy this week, and we are looking forward to a good match on Sunday."
The Mountaineers enter Sunday's match with a 4712.715 team average, the highest tally in the nation. Senior Milica Babic paces the team and ranks No. 2 nationally with a 596.143 air rifle average. Classmate Morgan Phillips ranks No. 3 nationally with a 586.857 smallbore average.
In its last match, Army fell to Kentucky, 4670-4734, on Jan. 19, in West Point, New York.
