WVU Wins Four Against Marshall to Cap Tournament

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team capped tournament action at Thunder in the Mountains on Sunday afternoon at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts in Charleston, West Virginia, as it won four of its five singles matches against in-state foe Marshall.
"We had a lot of good performances and learning experiences from the weekend for our team," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "We battled well on the courts and I believe improved throughout the weekend as a team. We are looking forward to having an opportunity to get back to practice and prepare for the next weekend of matches."
Singles Recap
Junior Anne-Sophie Courteau got things started for the Mountaineers, as she took on Anna Smith. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Courteau claimed the second set, 6-2. In the third-set tiebreaker, the junior secured the first win of the day for WVU, as she claimed the final frame, 10-4.
In the second match of the day, senior Christina Jordan was defeated by Daniela Dankanych, 2-6, 0-3, after Jordan had to retire early.
Junior Giovanna Caputo turned in an impressive performance against Madi Ballow. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native was able to put Ballow away in two sets, winning 6-0, 6-2.
Freshman Kat Lyman continued her strong debut weekend against Jutte Van Hansewyck. Lyman fell in the first set, 1-6, but rebounded to claim the second set, 6-2. In the super tiebreaker, Lyman won, 10-4, to claim West Virginia's third singles victory of the tournament finale.
Sophomore Nicole Roc capped tournament play with a stellar showing against Kara Joseph. Roc allowed Joseph to score only one point in two sets and emerged victorious, winning 6-1, 6-0.
With its four wins against its co-host in the final day, West Virginia finished this weekend's tournament with a singles record of 12-5.

West Virginia is set to travel to Williamsburg, Virginia, from Sept. 27-29 for the William & Mary Hidden Duel Tournament. The Mountaineers return to Williamsburg for the first time since 2016, when they opened their fall season at the home of the Tribe.
