West Virginia Wins Three to Open Tournament

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team collected three wins on day one of the William Mary Hall of Fame Classic on Friday afternoon at the Millie West Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Virginia.
"It was a good start to the tournament today, we had good competition going on," WVU coach Miha Lisac said. "If we can build on today's matches, this will be a solid step forward for us."

The Mountaineers got off to a rocky start to open tournament action. West Virginia dropped both of its doubles matches against VCU, with juniors Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau falling to Luminita Tutunaru and Gabriela Ana-Maria Davidescu, 8-3, and sophomore Nicole Roc and freshman Kat Lyman suffering the loss to Melissa Idifzhen and Noumea Witmus, 8-4.

Despite suffering a pair of setbacks in doubles action, WVU finished Friday's tournament opener strong and collected three singles victories over host William & Mary.
Courteau helped the Mountaineers rebound to open singles play, as she squared off against Natalia Perry. After dropping the first set, 4-6, Courteau bounced back to win the second frame, 6-4. In the third-set tiebreaker, the sophomore secured West Virginia's first victory of the day, winning the final frame handily, 10-4.
In a back-and-forth match, Caputo traded blow-for-blow with Mila Saric but was defeated in a pair of tiebreaking sets, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (6).
Lyman posted her fourth win as a Mountaineer and remained undefeated in singles, as she defeated Charlotte Madson in two sets, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Roc suffered a setback in the fourth singles match against Vitoria Okuyama. The sophomore was defeated in two sets, 3-6, 3-6, by Okuyama.
Sophomore Anastasiia Bovolskaia capped the first day of singles play for WVU, as she took on Elisa Van Meeteern. After sweeping the first set, 6-0, Bovolskaia narrowly dropped the second frame, 5-7. In the super tiebreaker, Bovolskaia clinched West Virginia's third and final win of the tournament, as she claimed the third set, 10-6.

Looking Ahead
West Virginia returns for day two of tournament action at the William & Mary Hall of Fame Classic tomorrow. WVU is set to take on Old Dominion in doubles play at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday. Following the conclusion of doubles, the Mountaineers are scheduled to square off against Liberty in singles play.
In Sunday's tournament finale, WVU and Liberty will once again square off in doubles action. West Virginia and VCU are scheduled to go head-to-head in the final singles action of the weekend to cap tournament play.
