MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the Big 12 Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Gardner, a three-time All-American, jumped an outdoor season-best 4.32 meters (14 feet, 2 inches) in the pole vault competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 13, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The performance was good for the victory and a facility record.
The Williamstown, West Virginia, native enters the week ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 and tied for No. 10 nationally in the pole vault this season. The conference honor is Gardner's second of the season and her career. She also was named the Big 12 Track and Field Women's Athlete of the Week during indoor season on Feb. 20.
The honor also is the third of the season for WVU. Along with Gardner's two accolades, redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson earned the distinction on March 20.
Gardner has competed in four meets this outdoor season and has won three of them. Last week's performance marked the second consecutive meet in which she jumped 4.30 meters or better.
WVU is set to compete at the Virginia Challenge, from April 19-20, in Charlottesville, Virginia. The two-day meet at Virginia's Lannigan Field will begin on Friday at 11 a.m. ET, with Saturday's events scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.
At last year's meet, Gardner broke her own outdoor school record, registering a career-best mark of 4.41 meters (14 feet, 5.50 inches) in a second-place finish.
