MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a week off from competition, the West Virginia University rowing team travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, on Sunday, April 14, for the George Mason Invite.
Sunday's races will begin at 10 a.m. ET and will take place on the Occoquan Reservoir at Sandy Run Regional. Results will be posted on WVUsports.com following the conclusion of the event.
"We return to the Occoquan Reservoir for a different race, and, hopefully, much different and improved weather and racing conditions compared to our last trip," WVU coach Jimmy King said. "Some of our crews did not get to race at all before our last regatta was canceled due to inclement conditions. With limited racing opportunities so far this spring, we're hopeful for good conditions to test our mid-season speed."
The Mountaineers are scheduled to compete in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and third varsity eight events.
WVU travels to the George Mason Invite – the only conference challenge in the collegiate ranks – for the third consecutive season. Last year, the Mountaineers raced their way to two event final wins and helped the Big 12 Conference claim 41 points, defeating the Colonial Athletic Association (36 points) and the Atlantic 10 Conference (31 points).
WVU, Kansas and Old Dominion are set to compete against three teams from the Atlantic 10 – Duquesne, St. Joseph's and host George Mason – and three teams from the Colonial Athletic Conference – Eastern Michigan, Delaware and Villanova – at this year's invite.
In the morning heats, each conference's boats will race against each other for seeding. The winner of each heat will go to the afternoon grand final, while the second-place team will go to the petite final. Teams which finish in third place will advance to the third final.
In the afternoon session, a boat from each league will compete in each final. The top team in each final will receive the most points, while lesser point values will be awarded to the boats finishing second and third. The conference with the most points at the end of the day will be crowned the winner. The point breakdown for the finals can be seen below.
