
Huerta Qualifies for Dominican National Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Fausto Huerta of the West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team qualified for the Dominican National Team at the 2019 Dominican Swimming Federation (FEDONA) National Swimming Championship on Saturday night in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Huerta placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:03.79 at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. On Friday, the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native placed third in the 50-meter breaststroke in 29.40.
With his qualification onto the national team, Huerta will compete at the 2019 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Aquatic Championships, from July 12-28, in Gwangju, South Korea, and the 2019 Pan American Games, from July 26-Aug. 11, in Lima, Peru. Huerta previously competed at the FINA World Junior Championships in 2017 and the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2018.
Elsewhere, eight Mountaineers competed at the TYR Pro Swim Series at Richmond, from April 11-13, at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center, in Richmond, Virginia. Junior Morgan Bullock and freshmen Giselle Gursoy and Reka Kovacs of the women's team and juniors Austin Hartke and Jack Portmann, sophomores David Dixon and Max Gustafson and freshman Josh Harlan of the men's team competed at the USA Swimming-sanctioned long-course meters meet, which featured more than 450 swimmers.
WVU combined to earn 13 second swims at the meet, including eight on Friday night. Dixon led the way with a fifth-place finish in the men's 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:01.94 on Friday. The Richmond native also swam in the C final of the men's 100-meter butterfly on Thursday night in his return to his hometown.
Hartke took 13th overall in the men's 50-meter backstroke (26.69) on Thursday, while Harlan placed 14th overall in the men's 400-meter individual medley (4:36.22). Bullock also registered a 14th-place finish in the women's 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:17.57 on Friday.
Bullock, Dixon, Gursoy, Hartke and Portmann all tallied multiple second swims throughout the weekend.
