
West Virginia Loses to Penn State to Close Regular Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving team lost to Penn State to close out the regular season on Friday at The Peak Health Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
The men's team (3-2) lost to the Nittany Lions, 163-137. The women's team (3-4) lost, 157-140.
The Mountaineers began the day winning three of the first four individual events to hold a slim lead.
As he has done all year, freshman Jake Salcedo dominated in the 1000-yard freestyle. He won the event with the final time of 9:13.38, marking the second-fastest time in program history for that event. Later in the meet, Salcedo won the 500-yard freestyle (4:29.75).
Senior Gabriela Martin followed Salcedo by winning the women's 200-yard freestyle (1:48.52). She also won the 100-yard free with a final time of 50.39.
Redshirt junior Christian Simpson also won in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 1:37.61.
Freshman Felix Vicknair posted the eighth-fastest time in program history in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.77) to win the event. Junior Maddie Smutny won the event on the women's side with a final time of 2:00.81.
Junior Delaney Cox was the last Mountaineer to win an individual event in the pool, as she placed first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.28).
Despite placing second in the 400-yard individual medley, sophomore MJ Gilligan recorded the second-fastest time in program history at 4:18.21.
In the diving well, freshman Stavroula Chalemou led the Mountaineers on platform, winning the event with a final score of 253.43. On the men's team, sophomore Levi Hellmann won platform (347.55) and redshirt senior Glenn Eloriaga finished second (311.40).
The diving team will compete at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Feb. 6-8, in Christiansburg, Virginia.
