MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team will close out the regular season this weekend at Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted at the Penn State Blue Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania, on Saturday and Sunday.
The No. 47-ranked Mountaineers will be joined by host No. 72 Penn State, UConn, Cornell, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Loyola (Md.), No. 84 Minnesota, Oakland, Rutgers, Seton Hall and William & Mary in this year's event. Golfers will tee off on the par-71, 7,219-yard Blue Golf Course in tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. for the first and second rounds. They'll return to the course for the final round on Sunday in 8 a.m. tee times.
WVU is paired with the Nittany Lions and the Golden Gophers for the first two rounds and will tee off starting at 8:15 a.m. Please note there will be no live scoring at the event.
"Coach Greg Nye, his assistant TJ Howe and the entire Penn State golf family have been great to us since we restarted our program," coach Sean Covich said. "Coach Nye has brought his team down to Pete Dye for our event in the past, we traditionally play them in a match every February down in Florida, and of course this will be our fourth consecutive trip to the Rutherford Intercollegiate. Our guys, especially Max and Pap, are very familiar with the Blue Course. This will be our first spring event back on familiar grass after spending all of February and March playing on dormant Bermuda in the Carolinas and Florida. We are excited about closing out the regular season on a strong note heading to The Greenbrier in a few weeks for the Big 12 Championship."
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene, senior Max Sear, junior Etienne Papineau, sophomore Logan Perkins and junior Philipp Matlari will make up the West Virginia lineup, while freshman Kurtis Grant will compete as an individual.
Sharpstene is coming off three straight top-15 finishes, most recently picking up his third top-10 finish of the season with a T-7th finish at the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis, North Carolina, last weekend. He tied for 18th place at last season's Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Sear finished as the individual runner-up in last year's tournament, leading WVU to a team runner-up finish. It was the second time in four years the Mountaineers have finished second at the event. This season, Sear ranks second in the squad with a 71.04 stroke average.
Papineau, who boasts a 72.08 average this season, took eighth at the 2018 Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Next up, West Virginia will host the 2019 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship on April 26-28 on The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
