MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three from the West Virginia University rifle team are set to compete at the USA Shooting Rifle/Pistol Spring Selection Match, March 27-30, at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit in Fort Benning, Georgia.
Senior Ginny Thrasher and sophomore Sarah Osborn will compete in the two-day air rifle match March 27-28. Junior Morgan Phillips will join her teammates in the two-day smallbore competition March 29-30.
This week's competition will help determine the United States' competitors for the 2019 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cups in Beijing and Munich, as well as the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Olympic quotas will be awarded at all three competitions.
Air rifle results will be added to the athletes' results from the 2018 USA Winter Airgun Championships to help determine roster placements.
"This is a great competition for Ginny, Sarah and Morgan to gain more experience competing on the national stage," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "A match like this is great exposure for them as individuals, as well as for the WVU rifle team.
"Ginny has exhausted her collegiate eligibility, and the national team is now her focus. For Sarah and Morgan, they're looking at this competition as a way to gain experience and progress their skillsets."
Most recently, the trio helped the Mountaineers finish second at the 2019 NCAA Rifle Championships on March 9 with a two-day aggregate score of 4692. Thrasher finished fifth in smallbore, while Phillips placed seventh.
