MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of Mountaineer sophomores came away with top-20 finishes as the West Virginia University golf team finished ninth at The Hootie Intercollegiate, hosted at Bull's Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, South Carolina, on Tuesday.
Matthew Sharpstene and Logan Perkins led the way for the Mountaineers, who shot 287- 287-291= 865 for one-over par. South Carolina took home the team title at 22 under with an 842, followed by Big 12 foe Kansas at 15-under par with a score of 849. WVU finished ahead of No. 4 Duke, who claimed 10th at three-over par.
"We let a few shots slip away out there on the closing nine today but overall, (it was) a solid week for us," coach Sean Covich said. "We ended up with some solid wins, including one over No. 4-ranked Duke. We look forward to getting back to campus and practicing at Pete Dye next week as we get ready for UNC Charlotte's event."
Sharpstene shot two under on the front nine but struggled on the back nine to finish 3-over par in the round with a 75. Showing a three-round score of three-under par with 69-69-75=213, he tied for 13th place. It marked his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Perkins balanced a trio of birdies with a pair of bogeys across the final round, finishing the one under with a 71. His 54-hole total of 72-71-71=214 put him in a tie for 16th place, his third top-20 finish of the season and his first in the starting lineup.
Junior Etienne Papineau shot five over on the front nine but added a trio of birdies on the back nine to shoot four over with a 76 in his final round. He finished at 73-70-76=219 to tie for 34th at three-over par.
After struggling in the first two rounds with scores of 75-77, senior Max Sear carded six birdies on his way to a 69 in the final round. His 54-hole total of 221 left him at five over par and moved him into a tie for 46th place.
Freshman Kurtis Grant rounded out the group, shooting 73-81-76=230. He finished tied for 71st place at 14 over.
The Mountaineers return to action on April 6-7 when they travel to Kannapolis, North Carolina, for the Irish Creek Collegiate.
