MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene leads the way for the West Virginia University golf team at The Cabarrus County Irish Creek Collegiate, sitting in the top 10 after 36 holes at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on Saturday.
The Mountaineers are even-par through two rounds of play and sit in sixth place, shooting 282-286=568.
"The course was playing pretty soft today, (as there was) not much wind, so it was very score-able," coach Sean Covich said. "Unfortunately, we didn't take advantage of that, left a few shots out there, didn't close out some rounds like we should have. Tomorrow I expect the same conditions, so we need to come out strong and close this event with a good round."
UNCG sits atop the team leaderboard at 11-under-par with a 557. Florida State is second at 10 under (558), while East Carolina sits third at seven-under-par (561).
Sharpstene, who hails from nearby Charlotte, North Carolina, used five birdies and a pair of bogeys to shoot two-under-par with a 69 in the first round. He added four more birdies in the second, but four bogeys put him at even-par with a 71. Sharpstene sits in 10th place with a two-round score of 69-71=140 at two under.
Despite a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey, senior Max Sear recovered with four birdies to shoot even par in the first round. He matched that score in the second and is tied for 19th place at even par with a 36-hole total of 71-71-142.
Juniors Etienne Papineau and Philipp Matlari are tied for 29th place with matching scores of 71-72=143 for one-over par. Papineau carded a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys to shoot even-par in the first round, before finishing one-over-par with three bogeys and a pair of birdies in the second. Matlari had five birdies in the first round but stumbled with a pair of double-bogeys and a bogey. He notched a trio of birdies, an eagle, four bogeys and a double-bogey in the second round.
Sophomore Logan Perkins rounds out the crew. He is tied for 86th, shooting 78-76=154 for 12 over.
The Mountaineers return to the links on Sunday in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. They're paired with Ohio State, Kansas and Charlotte for the third and final round.
