MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner of the West Virginia University track and field team has qualified for the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, as announced on Tuesday evening.
Gardner qualified for the women's pole vault for the second consecutive season and will compete against the nation's best on March 8-9, in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Williamstown, West Virginia, native enters the national meet ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference and tied for No. 9 nationally in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 4.38 meters (14 feet, 4.5 inches). The jump, which was set at the Penn State Tune-Up, on Feb. 16, in University Park, Pennsylvania, was good for a WVU indoor school record, as well as a meet and facility record.
This year, Gardner has jumped 4.30 meters or better five times. She also has recorded five wins during the indoor season, including three that went for facility-record marks.
Gardner also earned a pair of All-America honors last season. At the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, she placed ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.31 meters (14 feet, 1.75 inches), registering All-America Second Team accolades.
Later in the year, Gardner recorded All-America First Team honors at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She jumped 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches) to reach the podium.
UAB is set to host this year's National Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The women's pole vault competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 9, at 5 p.m. ET.
