
WVU Wins DMR at Akron Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by a first-place performance in the women's distance medley relay (gold division), the West Virginia University track and field team began competition at the 15th Annual Akron Invitational, at the Stile Athletics Field House, in Akron, Ohio, on Friday night.
 
Redshirt senior Bria Welker, redshirt freshmen Marianne Abdalah and Hayley Jackson and freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden led the Mountaineers to a win in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:54.35. The group, which won by more than 10 seconds, earned one of WVU's two top-three finishes on the night.
 
West Virginia competed in three total events on Friday. Along with the DMR, the Mountaineers also were represented in the women's long jump (blue division) and the women's pole vault (blue division).
 
Freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie earned a second-place finish in the long jump, recording a mark of 5.48 meters (17 feet, 11.75 inches), while sophomore Michaela Ashford placed eighth with a mark of 5.28 meters (17 feet, 4 inches). In the pole vault competition, freshman Audrey Schlosser led West Virginia with an eighth-place finish after posting a career-best mark of 3.52 meters (11 feet, 6.5 inches).
 
Sophomore Mikayla Shute also jumped 3.52 meters and finished ninth, while freshman Julia Brundin (3.22 meters – 10 feet, 6.75 inches) tied for 15th.
 
Along with WVU's first-place DMR team, redshirt junior Andrea Pettit, redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie and freshmen Samantha Hatcher and Margaret Rymer combined to take sixth place in the event with a time of 12:55.37.
 
The Mountaineers are one of 19 teams competing in Akron this weekend, joining the host Zips, Ashland, Buffalo, Cleveland State, Dayton, Findlay, Indiana Tech, Kent State, Malone, Marshall, Mount St. Mary's, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Penn, Fort Wayne, Saint Francis, Walsh and Xavier.
 
The Akron Invitational concludes on Saturday, with events set to being at 11 a.m. ET. Fans can follow along with the Mountaineers with the meet's live results page, presented by finishtiming.com.
