Pushkin Open Starts Indoor Campaign
December 07, 2019 03:06 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team opened the 2019-20 indoor season as it hosted in the Marty Pushkin Open at the WVU Shell Building on Saturday.
In all, the Mountaineers collected nine victories at the season-opening meet. The annual event is named in honor of Dr. Martin Pushkin, who served as the WVU cross country and track and field coach for more than two decades.
"Today was a success on many levels," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Any time we can come indoors at home and shake off the rust after fall conditioning, we take advantage of the opportunity. This is a tricky time of the year with dead week and final exams before everyone heads home for the holidays. It's vital that we at the very least maintain our current condition over the next four weeks. We have one more home meet before embarking on the rest of the season, and we have to build on today's meet and continue to set high goals."
Redshirt sophomore Tessa Constantine secured the first victory for the Mountaineers in the 500-meter run (1:19.94), followed by redshirt freshman Amber Dombrowski's win in the 400-meter dash (1:02.14).
In the mile, sophomore Linda Jebet posted a time of 5:42.23 to secure a victory. Freshman Michaela Rose collected two wins in her WVU debut. The first came in the 60-meter dash (7.93 seconds), followed by another in the 200 meters in 26.64.
The 4x400-meter relay closed the afternoon on the track, as the Mountaineer team of Dombrowski, Constantine, Rose and freshman Erica Hegele combined to finish in 4:10.87 to lead the race.
In field events, sophomore Sada Wright led the way with a win in the weight throw. Her mark of 16.50 meters is the third-best distance in the weight throw in program history. Additionally, sophomore Myesha Nott was victorious in the long jump (5.18 meters) and junior Ellie Gardner finished first in the pole vault (3.78m).
WVU was joined by six teams at the annual indoor meet, including Alderson Broaddus, the Fairmont State Track Club, Frostburg State, Waynesburg, West Liberty and the WVU Track Club.
Up next, the Mountaineers are set to ring in the new year with their second and final home meet of the indoor season, as they host the WVU Invitational on Friday, Jan. 10. Action at the WVU Shell Building is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
