Gardner Reaches New Career Best to Lead WVU Open
January 10, 2020 05:01 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by junior Ellie Gardner's personal best in the women's pole vault, the West Virginia University track and field team hosted its second and final home meet of the indoor campaign with the WVU Open on Friday afternoon at the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown.
Gardner earned a mark of 3.88 meters, besting her previous career-high height of 3.86 meters, which she reached at the YSU Collegiate Invite in 2018. With the mark, the Williamstown, West Virginia, native earned the victory in the pole vault competition. In all, the Mountaineers tallied seven victories in the meet, including four on the track and three in field events.
"Today's meet went pretty much as anticipated," coach Sean Cleary said. "It seemed like a few of the kids had some tired legs today after getting back to hard work this week, while others came out and performed at a level higher than they did prior to Christmas. I was just excited to get the girls back into their normal routines and regular practice so we can now let the winter season unfold."
Redshirt freshman Amber Dombrowski collected West Virginia's first victory of the day in the 500-meter run after crossing the line in 1:19.63. Freshman Erica Hegele represented WVU in the 60-meter hurdles, taking first place in the finals with a time of 9.35, while freshman Michaela Rose competed in the 60-meter dash finals and finished in second place (8.13).
Redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah made her season debut in the mile run, taking first place in 5:13.96, ahead of sophomore Linda Jebet in second (5:36.04). Rose then collected her first win of the afternoon in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.76, while Hegele finished in fifth (28.18).
In field events, sophomore Myesha Nott took first place in the triple jump with a mark of 12.10 meters, and Hegele grabbed second place in the shot put with a distance of 10.38 meters. Sophomore Sada Wright earned her second win of the season in the weight throw, reaching a mark of 14.57 meters.
WVU then completed a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault, where Gardner shined and secured the top spot with a lifetime-best height of 3.88 meters. Freshman Katelyn Caccamo and sophomore Julia Brundin came behind her in second (3.48m) and third (3.28m), respectively.
The Mountaineers return to competition next Friday, Jan. 17, for their first road trip of the 2019-20 indoor season. The squad is set to compete at the YSU Collegiate Invitational, beginning at 12 p.m. ET, in Youngstown, Ohio.
