WVU Falls in Three at No. 1 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Unable to overcome a Texas offense hitting .384, the West Virginia University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Texas on Sunday, inside Gregory Gymnasium, in Austin, Texas. The Mountaineers (11-12, 2-8) fell to the Longhorns (16-2, 10-0) in set scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16.
Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans registered double-digit kills for the 11th consecutive match, posting a team-high 10 kills in the loss. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch was three kills shy of double-digits, recording seven kills on 16 attacks for a team-best .375 hitting percentage. Lynch also recorded two block assists on the day to lead WVU's blocking efforts.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting dug a team-high 18 balls in the match, followed by classmate Lindsay Proctor with seven.
Additionally, sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 25 of WVU's 30 assists.
The Mountaineers finished the contest with 33 kills, 41 digs and two team blocks. The Longhorns had 47 kills, 38 digs and five team blocks. Micaya White led UT's offense with 15 kills, while Logan Eggleston had a team-high 14 digs.
West Virginia could not overcome a Texas offense hitting .344, suffering a 25-16 setback in the opening set. A pair of 3-0 scoring runs increased the Longhorns' lead to nine at 22-13. Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan eventually came up with a huge swing to stop UT's scoring streak, as Evans placed one through the defenders to cut the Mountaineers' deficit to six at 23-16. WVU's next serve went long, as Texas reached set point. The Longhorns then put down their 13th kill of the frame for the first-set win, as West Virginia fell into a 1-0 hole in the match.
Trialing 20-13 in set two, West Virginia used an 8-2 scoring surge down the stretch to come within one, down 22-21. Texas took a timeout to regroup, rattling off three straight points out of the stoppage for the 25-21 second-set victory and 2-0 match lead.
Texas used a 4-0 scoring streak to jump out to a 19-10 lead late in the third and never looked back. Lynch and Evans each laid down a kill, as a UT attacking error brought WVU within six at 19-13. The Longhorns continued to roll though, scoring six of the last nine points for the 25-16 third-set win and 3-0 triumph in the match.
Up next, the Mountaineers will continue their road swing by traveling to Ames, Iowa, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, for their second meeting of the season with the Iowa State Cyclones. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at the Hilton Coliseum.
