MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nine members of the West Virginia University women's soccer team were named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Soccer Team, the league office announced today.
Six student-athletes were named the to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while three earned second-team honors.
Seniors
Rylee Foster (sport management) and
Jade Gentile (global supply chain management) earned their second career Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor after Foster was named to the first team last season and Gentile earned the award in 2017.
The award marks Gentile's third overall Academic All-Big 12 honor after she landed on the second team in 2018.
Four Mountaineers earned their first career Academic All-Big 12 First Team accolade: junior
Danielle Gordon (marketing) and sophomores
Jordan Brewster (business and economics),
Lizzie Mayfield (athletic coaching education) and
Alina Stahl (business and economics).
Senior
Kayla Morrison (economics) and juniors
Lauren Segalla (psychology) and Stefany Ferrer-VanGinkel (sport management) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
In total, 142 student-athletes were honored by the Big 12 Conference, with 109 players named to the first team.
First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation also are eligible.
The Mountaineers (9-6-2, 4-3-1) conclude their 2019 regular-season slate against TCU on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match will be nationally televised on FS1. WVU will recognize the team's four seniors prior to the match and celebrate Halloween by offering free admission and candy to fans who come dressed in a costume. A costume contest also will be held during the game.
