MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's soccer teams have been recognized with the Team Academic Award by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced on Thursday.
The award honors outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2018-19 academic year. With the accolade, the Mountaineer women's team has been recognized for 18 consecutive years, while the men's team received the award for the 12th year in a row.
WVU earned a 3.39 grade point average on the women's side. The men combined to earn a 3.34 GPA.
"The culture with this program is success with honor and integrity," WVU men's coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "If you look at our kids, they don't get in trouble, and they perform on the field and in the classroom. It's our No. 1 priority. I'm proud of these guys, I'm proud of (associate director, student-athlete development) Toni Oliverio, our staff and our overall commitment to our academic success."
"We have always held our student-athletes to the highest standard when it comes to academics," WVU women's coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We are proud that their hard work has been recognized again this year. This is an award that we strive to win year in and year out."
West Virginia is one of 255 schools to have its men's and women's programs honored with the award. In all, 989 programs were recognized, including 644 women's teams and 345 men's teams.
Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster for the 2018-19 academic year.
