MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing opened its 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon, as it raced to a trio of top-five finishes at the Yinzer Cup in Neville Township, Pennsylvania.
"Today's event was an opportunity to assess how our training is coming along, and we thank Robert Morris University for including us in the inaugural Yinzer Cup," WVU coach
Jimmy King said. "We have some good takeaways from today and will use that as continued motivation going forward."
West Virginia began the day in the varsity 4+ race, where two Mountaineer boats placed second and fourth in the event. The WVU 'A' boat led the way in the varsity four race, as the crew crossed the finish line in 11:51.89, just two seconds shy of first place. The Mountaineers' 'B' boat followed shortly behind and finished the race in 12:14.29.
West Virginia's second and fourth-place finishes were out of 11 teams. Host Robert Morris finished first in the varsity 4+ event.
The Mountaineers finished the Yinzer Cup in the varsity 8+ race, the day's final event. The West Virginia crew finished the race in 10:41.70 to secure third place in the event and capture WVU's third top-five finish of the day.
WVU's third-place finish in the varsity 8+ race was out of eight teams. George Mason University and Canisius College took first and second in the event, respectively.

The West Virginia University rowing team is off until Saturday, Nov. 2, as the team travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, to compete at the Head of the Occoquan.
