MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University Rowing program announced its team award winners for the 2024-25 year on Sunday, May 11, at the Erickson Alumni Center, recognizing senior award recipients and the Flame, Hammer, Wake and MVP awards winners.
While all the members of the rowing team are varsity student-athletes, the award winners are named for the traditional novice and varsity squads that comprise the rowing program. All awards, apart from the Senior Award and the Hammer, are voted on by the team.
The Hammer - The Hammer Award is presented to one varsity and one novice athlete every year with the fastest recorded 2k erg scores of the season. It recognizes the importance of power and erg speed in the sport of rowing.

The Flame - The Flame Award is given to the varsity and novice athletes who are most recognized by their teammates for consistent work ethic, contributions to the team, and serving as positive role models within rowing and beyond. These athletes lift up their teammates with words, attitude and true Mountaineer Spirit, through their darkest and brightest days as Mountaineers.

The Wake - Wake refers to disturbance or change. This award goes to the person who has personally made the most positive change within themselves from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. The person who has developed and changed most throughout the year.

MVP Award - This award is given to the varsity and novice student-athletes whose teammates have recognized them as being essential components to the success of the team. Consideration is given to on and off-water performances, as well as leadership and a focus on contributions to racing speed on the water.

The rowing team will travel to Sarasota, Florida, to compete on Sunday, May 18, in the Big 12 Championship at Nathan Benderson Park.
