Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team scored a goal in the 82nd minute and put two shots on net in the final six minutes but could not overcome a two-nil halftime deficit as the team fell to No. 15 Oklahoma State, 2-1, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday.
WVU fell to 7-6-1 on the year and 2-3 in Big 12 play with the loss, while OSU moved to 11-1-3 with a 4-1-1 mark in league play. Oklahoma State now leads the Big 12 with 13 points entering play on Friday.
The result marks the first time the Cowgirls have defeated the Mountaineers, as WVU now holds a 9-1-0 edge in the series with a 4-1 advantage in Morgantown.
"I didn't think the first half was our best half performance, but I thought we turned it around in the second half," Coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "You have to give OSU credit for finding two (goals), unfortunately, we couldn't find the second goal to equalize."
Oklahoma State struck first in the 13th minute as Kim Rodriguez hit a free-kick from 30-yards out that curved its way into the back of the net, despite a solid effort from WVU's senior goalkeeper
Rylee Foster.
The Cowgirls doubled the lead in the 29th after Olyvia Dowell broke through the Mountaineer defense and sent a ground ball across the box to teammate Grace Yochum, who put it into the top of the net to give OSU a 2-0 lead.
West Virginia earned five shots in the opening 45 minutes, while Oklahoma State recorded seven shots. WVU held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks entering the locker room.
The Mountaineer offense came to life in the second half, as the squad earned two shots on net in the first five minutes of action.
Freshman defender
Juliana Lynch put WVU on the board in the 82nd minute after she fired a hard shot from 22-yards out that found the right side of the net and cut the Cowgirls' lead in half.
The goal was the first of Lynch's career, while sophomore
Lizzie Mayfield earned her team-high fourth assist of the season. Junior midfielder Stefany Ferrar-vanGinkel was also credited with her first dish of the season.
WVU continued the offensive attack following the goal but was unable to find the back of the net, as OSU's netminder Dani Greenlee picked up a pair of saves in the final six minutes of play. WVU forced Greenlee into six saves throughout the second half and seven in the match.
The Mountaineers finished the contest with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks and a 13-9 advantage in shots.
