Box Score Lindell Wiggington's 27 points helped 20
th-ranked Iowa State to a 93-68 victory over West Virginia Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Â
The minus-14 degree temperatures outside in Ames didn't deter 14,252 from showing up tonight to watch the Cyclones roll to their 16
thvictory of the season.
Â
West Virginia, without its top Big 12 scorer Beetle Bolden, who didn't make the trip after injuring his ankle in last Saturday's loss at Tennessee, turned the basketball over 19 times and committed 26 fouls leading to 29 Iowa State free throws.
Â
The Cyclones shot a sizzling 54.5 percent from the floor - most of that coming on driving layups, dunks or shots close to the rim.
Â
"They out-athlete us," West Virginia coach
Bob Huggins said on his postgame radio show. "We gave up so many straight-line drives, which is a no-no. We've got guys who have been here four years turning people loose to the middle of the floor."
Â
Marial Shayok scored 18 points and Nick Weiler-Babb added 14 to help move Iowa State into a three-way tie for third place with Texas Tech and Kansas in the Big 12 standings at 5-3.
Â
The Mountaineers (9-12, 1-7) led just once, 18-17, on
Brandon Knapper's bank-shot 3 with 10:29 to go in the first half before Iowa State used an 8-0 run to take a 25-18 advantage. The Cyclones made another 9-0 run later in the half to build their margin to 16 on the way to a 45-28 lead at intermission.
Â
An
Emmitt Matthews Jr. basket with 9:10 remaining in the game got West Virginia's deficit down to 10, 61-51 - the closest West Virginia could get before the Cyclones responded with back-to-back baskets by Weiler-Babb and Wiggington.
Â
Iowa State's biggest lead was 27 points with 42 seconds to go.
Â
Lamont West scored 24 points before fouling out to lead West Virginia.
Â
Senior forward
Esa Ahmad added 11, including his 1,000
th career point before he fouled out with 5:20 remaining. He is the 53rd player in school history to do so.
Matthews Jr. matched his season high with 11 points, all of those coming in the second half.
"This team gets loose balls less than any team I've ever had," Huggins said. "They offensive rebound it less than any team I've ever had. When you couple that with not being very good shooters, that's a formula for being (9-12)."
Â
Huggins was ejected from the game with 3:28 remaining after drawing a pair of technical fouls arguing a no-call on a missed
Wesley Harris shot attempt.
Â
"It was a combination of things," Huggins said of the two technicals.
Â
West Virginia returns to action this Saturday to face Oklahoma in a noon game at the WVU Coliseum.
