
WVU Begins PSU National Open with Three Top-Five Finishes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team opened competition at the Penn State National Open at the Ashenfelter Indoor Track in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday night.
The Mountaineers competed in four events on the opening night of the two-day meet. The squad combined to earn three top-five finishes.
On the track, WVU's distance medley relay team, comprised of redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson, redshirt senior Bria Welker and freshmen Mikenna Vanderheyden and Samantha Hatcher, finished second with a time of 11:40.72. Additionally, freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie competed in the first round of the women's 60-meter dash, clocking in with a time of 7.73 for a 20th-place finish.
Friday's field events included the women's pole vault, where sophomore Mikayla Shute and freshman Molly DeBone tied for fourth place with a mark of 3.39 meters (11 feet, 1.5 inches). Freshman Audrey Schlosser finished 14th with a jump of 3.24 meters (10 feet, 7.5 inches).
Freshman Sada Wright capped the evening in the women's weight throw. She earned a mark of 13.30 meters (43 feet, 7.75 inches) to place 33rd.
The Mountaineers are joined by more than 30 schools in University Park this weekend. The meet marks the eighth time WVU has competed in an indoor competition at Penn State since the start of the 2014-15 season.
