
WVU Begins Indoor Campaign at Pushkin Classic

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner led the way in the West Virginia University track and field team's 2018-19 indoor season opener at the Marty Pushkin Track Classic, on Friday, Jan. 11, at the WVU Shell Building.
Gardner won the women's pole vault, earning a mark of 4.30 meters, the fourth-best jump in the nation so far this season. The Williamstown, West Virginia, native's victory was one of nine first-place finishes for the Mountaineers on the night.
Freshman Margaret Rymer, who was one of several Mountaineers making their collegiate debut on Friday, won the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.00, before she helped West Virginia's 4x400-meter relay team to a win. Rymer joined freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie and sophomores Michaela Ashford and McKenna Smith, who combined for a first-place time of 4:06.56.
McKenzie also won the women's 60-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 7.78. The Clarendon, Jamaica, native finished just ahead of Smith, who took second place in 7.79. Ashford placed fourth in 7.95.
In field events, redshirt junior Faith Penny was victorious in the women's high jump, earning a mark of 1.62 meters. Freshman Sada Wright also tallied a win in the women's weight throw, registering a mark of 13.59 meters.
Wright went on to finish sixth in the women's shot put with a mark of 10.33 meters.
Along with her win in the 4x400 relay, Ashford also placed seventh in the women's long jump, recording a mark of 4.63 meters.
Friday's meet closed with the women's pole vault, where Gardner, a 2018 All-American, showcased her ability. She cleared heights of 4.05 and 4.15 meters before her final successful jump of 4.30 meters capped the evening. Sophomore Mikayla Shute finished fourth with a jump of 3.45 meters, while freshman Audrey Schlosser took sixth place with a 3.45-meter jump (judge's decision).
Additionally, redshirt freshmen Hayley Jackson (3,000 meters) and Marianne Abdalah (mile) and freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden (800 meters) all won events on Friday. The trio ran unattached.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 18, at the YSU College Invite in Youngstown, Ohio. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET.
