MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team earned a fifth-place team finish at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday night at the Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pennsylvania.
Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills paced the Mountaineers, crossing the finish line in 11th place in a 6k time of 21:28. The Morgantown, West Virginia, native was one of three top-30 finishers for WVU.
"Despite winning last week's invitational in Charlotte, I am leaving today's meet feeling even better about our team," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "A few pieces have begun to show themselves in the last seven days, and we're feeling quite optimistic about where we can go as a program.
"I am especially proud of Sarah's race today. She had a massive course personal record on tired legs. I think this shows very well for where I feel she can be running at season's end."
Redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer placed 20th in 22:07, while freshman Hannah Lipps took 21st in 22:08. Sophomore Bree Warren finished in 33rd place in 22:20, ahead of redshirt freshman Marianne Abdalah, who registered a 42nd-place finish in 22:41.
Friday's race featured 127 runners from 10 different schools. The Mountaineers finished with 127 points as a team, behind No. 12 Penn State (32), No. 22 Syracuse (55), No. 25 Georgetown (73) and Cornell (87).
Saint Joseph's placed sixth as a team with 204 points, while Pitt placed seventh with 209 points. American (213), Navy (215) and Grove City (314) rounded out the team results.
Friday marked the Mountaineers' seventh consecutive trip to the Spiked Shoe Invitational. It also was the 10th time the squad has competed at the Blue-White Course since 2014. The team will return to University Park for the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 12, and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, Nov. 9.
Following a week away from action, West Virginia will travel to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, for the Lock Haven XC Open on Saturday, Sept. 22.
