MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team recorded three top-five finishes en route to a team victory at the Lock Haven Invitational in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, on Saturday morning.
Redshirt junior Olivia Hill paced the Mountaineers with a second-place overall finish, crossing the West Branch Cross Country Course at the Stern Athletic Complex (6k) finish line in 20:59.5. Redshirt junior Candace Jones, who made her season debut at the meet, finished third in 21:15.9. Freshman Hannah Lipps took fifth place in 21:43.6.
Redshirt freshman Marianne Abdalah finished sixth in 21:58.1, while freshman Linda Jebet earned a 11th-place finish (22:21.1) in her WVU debut.
WVU earned 27 points and earned the team victory in a field of 17 schools and 221 total runners. West Chester (114), Point Park (129), Lebanon Valley (149) and Penn State Club (159) rounded out the top five in the team standings.
"Today was about what we expected from the ladies," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "It was nice to see the group running at or near the front. As we move forward, we need to be able to take today's efforts and translate them into more dense, competitive opportunities.
"Once we resume training this week, we will evaluate the health of this group and make our plans for Lehigh."
For Hill, the performance marked her second top-three finish of the season. Additionally, Lipps secured her second top-10 finish of her West Virginia career.
The victory is the second for the Mountaineers this season. WVU also won its season-opening meet at the Charlotte Opener on Aug. 31, in Concord, North Carolina. It's the first time the Mountaineers have recorded multiple team wins in a season since 2011.
Saturday marked the first time WVU competed at Lock Haven since 2007. The meet also was the Mountaineers' first in 15 days.
Next up, WVU travels to Lehigh's Paul Short Run on Saturday, Sept. 29, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The women's 6k race is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET.
