WVU Completes Trip to Lehigh

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team earned an 18th-place finish at the 45th annual Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
Freshman Charlotte Wood led the Mountaineers, finishing 39th overall in the women's gold race. Wood crossed the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course (6k) finish line in 21:38. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills was next for WVU, finishing in 49th place in 21:44.
Sophomore Bree Warren placed 61st in 21:50, while redshirt freshman Marianne Abdalah took 116th in 22:22. Redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer also ran for the Mountaineers, finishing in 24:07 for 265th.
WVU earned 530 team points in a field of 41 teams and 353 total finishers.
"I am extremely happy with four of the five performances today, it leaves me very optimistic for the second half of the season," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "When you only line up five to race, you run the risk of having a mistake out there. Unfortunately for Tig, she had an off day as a result of a curious side stitch. She will recover, and the team will move forward. The experience gained today is invaluable, and it will serve well for the end of the season.
"I'm also pleased to see the young ladies who were sick a few weeks ago get their legs back underneath them in what was a very competitive situation. They ran extremely strong races."
Yale won the race after tallying 118 team points, while No. 26 Georgia (127), No. 14 Utah State (163), Cornell (208) and Virginia Tech (256) rounded out the top five.
The Paul Short Run, which is hosted annually by Lehigh, is one of the largest intercollegiate cross country meets in the nation. It featured four women's races, which totaled over 125 schools. Saturday marked the Mountaineers' first appearance at the meet since 2016.
Next up, the Mountaineers conclude the regular season at the Penn State National Open on Friday, Oct. 12, at the Blue-White Golf Course (6k) in University Park, Pennsylvania. The meet is slated to begin at 10:45 a.m. ET.
WVU previously visited Penn State on Sept. 7, at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. The team earned a fifth-place finish.
