John Means Earns First MLB Call-Up

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia University left-handed pitcher John Means has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced today.
Means is making his first career appearance on an MLB roster. A Mountaineer in 2013 and 2014, he was drafted by the Orioles in the 11th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Means is the second Mountaineer to earn his first MLB call-up this season and the third currently on a big-league roster.
When Means makes is MLB debut, he will become the 24th player in program history to play in the Major Leagues. He is the second player coached by Randy Mazey at West Virginia to earn an MLB call-up.
Means joins Jedd Gyorko of the St. Louis Cardinals (WVU 2008-10) and former WVU teammate Harrison Musgrave of the Colorado Rockies (WVU 2011-14) currently on an MLB roster. Gyorko is in his sixth season in the big leagues and third in St. Louis, while Musgrave made his Major League debut this season and has appeared in 31 games for the Rockies in 2018.
A native of Olathe, Kansas, Means was named to an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2014 and to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2014. He started 25 career games as a Mountaineer and earned a record of 10-6. Means posted a 3.24 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 141.2 innings pitched. He gave up 51 earned runs on 145 hits with 40 walks.
Means spent the majority of the 2018 season with Triple-A Norfolk. He started 19 games and earned a 6-5 record with a 3.48 ERA. In 111.1 innings pitched, Means allowed 43 earned runs on 123 hits with 89 strikeouts and 19 walks.
The Orioles close out the 2018 season with a three-game series in Boston against the Red Sox and a four-game series in Baltimore against the Houston Astros.
