August 29, 2018 01:39 PM | Baseball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Featuring games against Pitt and Marshall, the West Virginia University baseball team's fall schedule was announced Wednesday.
The two-game fall schedule begins vs. in-state foe Marshall on Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. ET, and concludes with the Backyard Brawl vs. Pitt on Friday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. Both exhibition contests will be played at Monongalia County Ballpark, and admission will be free for all fans.
"We are excited for the opportunity to play two longtime, local foes this fall," WVU coach Randy Mazey said. "Playing two quality teams will help us in our preparation for the 2019 season, and I know fans will be excited to see us play Pitt and Marshall at Monongalia County Ballpark. This is a great chance for Mountaineer Nation to get an early look at this year's team as we prepare for the 2019 season."
Two of the longest-running series in program history, the Mountaineers played Pitt and Marshall once during the 2018 regular season. West Virginia earned a 12-1 victory over the Panthers, and a 11-10, 13-inning win against the Thundering Herd in Charleston. Weather forced the cancellation of both second games in last season's series.
WVU's 2018 fall roster features 25 players from last year's team and 15 newcomers. Eight returners were All-Big 12 Team honorees in 2018, including Darius Hill, who was named to the ABCA East All-Region First Team and the All-Big 12 Second Team. The 15 newcomers are part of the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history, which is rated No. 26 by Perfect Game.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 29-27 season in 2018, and advanced to the Big 12 Championship semifinals for the third consecutive year. West Virginia earned an All-America accolade for the fourth consecutive season, while four Mountaineers were selected in the 2018 MLB Draft.
West Virginia's 2019 regular-season roster will be announced at a later date.
