MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fifteen former West Virginia University baseball players are currently playing professional baseball, including Major Leaguers Jedd Gyorko and Harrison Musgrave.
The list of professional Mountaineers includes five West Virginia natives (Jimmy Galusky, Michael Grove, Gyorko, Musgrave and Corey Walter) and four members of the 2018 WVU squad (Galusky, Kyle Gray, Grove and BJ Myers). Additionally, five former Mountaineers have been promoted to a higher league during the 2018 season.
Jedd Gyorko (INF) – St. Louis Cardinals (Major League Baseball)
Jedd Gyorko (WVU 2008-10) is in his sixth MLB season, the fourth-most by a Mountaineer, and is in his third year with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 81 games this season, Gyorko is hitting .247 with 54 hits, 30 RBIs and seven home runs. He is tied for fourth on the team with 11 doubles and boasts a .324 on-base percentage and a .402 slugging percentage.
With 106 career home runs, Gyorko is the first Mountaineer to hit more than 100 career homers, while his 576 big-league hits are second-most among any WVU player. Gyorko's .245 batting average is third-highest among all Mountaineers who played in at least 10 career MLB games.
Harrison Musgrave (LHP) – Colorado Rockies (Major League Baseball)
Harrison Musgrave (WVU 2011-14) earned his first MLB call-up on April 23, and has appeared in 20 games on the mound with the Colorado Rockies. He owns a 1-3 record with a 4.76 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. Musgrave's first career win came on July 13, when he pitched 3.0 innings in the Rockies' victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Musgrave is the 11th Mountaineer pitcher to appear in an MLB game and the seventh to earn at least one win. His 20 strikeouts and 28.1 innings pitched are both fifth-most by a WVU pitcher.
Billy Fleming (INF) – Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A, New York Yankees)
Billy Fleming (WVU 2012-14) is currently with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, and also has had a pair of stints with the Double-A Trenton Thunder. In 27 games at Triple-A, Fleming is hitting .275 with 25 hits in 91 at-bats. He has 11 RBIs, seven doubles, 12 runs scored and six walks. In 44 games in Double-A, Fleming is hitting .298 with a .488 slugging percentage. He has 50 hits in 168 at-bats with six home runs, 23 RBIs, 12 doubles and 16 walks.
Three days after getting called back up to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Fleming was placed on the seven-day disabled list on July 26.
John Means (LHP) – Norfolk Tides (Triple-A, Baltimore Orioles)
John Means (WVU 2013-14) was called up to Triple-A Norfolk in May, where he has made 13 starts and owns a 5-1 record with a 2.87 ERA. In 75.1 innings pitched, Means has allowed 24 earned runs on 74 hits with 69 strikeouts and nine walks. He has pitched at least 6.0 innings in each of his last seven starts, while allowing fewer than six hits in all but one start in that span.
Means' 2.87 ERA is No. 1 on the team amongst starters, while his nine walks is the fewest by any pitcher with at least 33.0 innings pitched. Overall, he ranks third on the team with five wins, fourth with 75.1 innings pitched and fifth with 69 strikeouts.
Ryan McBroom (OF) – Trenton Thunder (Double-A, New York Yankees)
Ryan McBroom (WVU 2011-14) has spent the 2018 season in Double and Triple-A, playing in 73 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and 20 games with Double-A Trenton. Currently in his third stint with the Trenton Thunder, McBroom is hitting .333 in 20 games at Double-A. He has 27 hits, four home runs, four doubles and 13 RBIs with six walks in 81 at-bats. McBroom owns a .556 slugging percentage and .949 OPS.
In 73 games with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, McBroom is hitting .297 with 80 hits, 14 doubles, nine home runs and 32 RBIs in 269 at-bats. He has 15 walks and 35 runs scored with a .457 slugging percentage and .787 OPS at Triple-A.
Corey Walter (RHP) – Midland RockHounds (Double-A, Oakland Athletics)
Corey Walter (WVU 2011-14) has made 17 appearances on the mound with nine starts for Double-A Midland in 2018. He owns a 2-5 record with a 6.75 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched. Walter has allowed 44 earned runs on 82 hits with 34 strikeouts and 17 walks.
Chad Donato (RHP) – Quad Cities River Bandits (Single-A, Houston Astros)
Chad Donato (WVU 2014-16) is currently with Single-A Quad Cities after getting promoted from Class-A Short Season. In five appearances with Quad Cities, Donato has made four starts and owns a 3.86 ERA. In 21.0 innings, he has 27 strikeouts and 11 walks while allowing nine earned runs on 18 hits. Donato is 0-0 on the year with one save.
Donato began the year with Tri-City, where he made three appearances and two starts with a 0.00 ERA in 16.0 innings. He posted a 3-0 record and struck out 21 with three walks while allowing two unearned runs on eight hits. In eight total appearances in 2018, Donato has pitched at least 5.0 innings five times.
Kyle Gray (INF) – Staten Island Yankees (Single-A, New York Yankees)
A 14th-round pick by the New York Yankees in this year's draft, Kyle Gray (WVU 2016-18) was assigned to the Staten Island Yankees in the New York Penn League. In 20 games, Gray is hitting .138 with nine hits in 65 at-bats. He has two doubles, a home run, five RBIs and nine runs scored with a stolen base and 12 walks.
Garrett Hope (C) – Great Lakes Loons (Single-A, Los Angeles Dodgers)
Garrett Hope (WVU 2015) has played in 19 games for the Single-A Great Lakes Loons. He is hitting .105 with six hits, six RBIs, two home runs, two doubles, six runs scored and 13 walks in 57 at-bats. Hope currently is on the seven-day disabled list, as of July 25.
BJ Myers (RHP) – Hudson Valley Renegades (Single-A, Tampa Bay Rays)
BJ Myers (WVU 2015-18) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 35th round of this year's draft and was assigned to the Single-A Hudson Valley Renegades. Myers has made nine appearances with Hudson Valley, posting a 2-0 record with two saves and a 1.42 ERA. In 12.2 innings in relief, he has allowed two earned runs on 10 hits with 17 strikeouts and eight walks. Myers' first career win came on June 20, as he struck out five batters in 2.0 shutout innings. Seven of Myers' nine appearances have come in the eighth, ninth or 10th innings.
Blake Smith (RHP) – Inland Empire 66ers (Single-A, Los Angeles Angels)
Blake Smith (WVU 2015-16) is playing for the Single-A (Advanced) Inland Empire 66ers, where he has made 12 appearances in 2018. He owns a 2-0 record with one save and a 5.18 ERA. In 24.1 innings pitched, Smith has allowed 14 earned runs on 21 hits with 20 strikeouts and nine walks. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on July 17.
Jimmy Galusky (INF) – Great Falls Voyagers (Rookie League, Chicago White Sox)
After being selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Jimmy Galusky (WVU 2015-18) was assigned to the Great Falls Voyagers in the Pioneer League. In 17 games, Galusky is hitting .235 with 12 hits in 51 at-bats. He has two doubles, four RBIs, three stolen bases and four walks.
Michael Grove (RHP) – Arizona League Dodgers (Arizona League, Los Angeles Dodgers)
Michael Grove (WVU 2016-18) was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second round with the 68th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. The fourth Mountaineer ever drafted in the top two rounds, Grove is WVU's highest draft pick since 2010, when Gyorko was selected in the second round with the 59th overall pick by the San Diego Padres.
Grove signed with the Dodgers in early July, and was assigned to the Arizona League Dodgers. He currently is recovering from an injury, which sidelined him in his final season as a Mountaineer in 2018.
Kyle Davis (INF) – Southern Illinois Miners (Frontier League)
Kyle Davis (WVU 2015-17) has played in 20 games with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League. He is hitting .186 with 13 hits in 70 at-bats with seven RBIs, two home runs and eight runs scored. Davis has three multi-hit games, including a two-hit day, with a homer and two runs scored, on July 13 at Florence.
KC Huth (OF) – Cleburn Railroaders (American Association)
KC Huth (WVU 2015-16) is in his third season playing independent ball. In 63 games this season, Huth is hitting .261 with 65 hits in 249 at-bats. He has 13 RBIs, four triples, three doubles and a home run with six walks and eight stolen bases.
