MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team was named an 18Birdies All-Academic Team, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Friday.
The 2017-18 season marks the second straight year the Mountaineers have earned the honor.
"Our program has certainly improved in all areas since bringing golf back to WVU and earning this academic honor for the second consecutive year shows our guys are working hard in the classroom," coach Sean Covich said. "All the credit goes to Stephanie White and her staff. They do a great job. This award was earned by her and our players."
The Mountaineers garnered several academic accolades this season. Max Sear, Drew Dewald, Avery Schneider and Etienne Papineau were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in May, while Tristan Nicholls earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team Honors. Logan Perkins was named to the Big 12's Academic All-Rookie Team in June. Additionally, the team earned "Most Improved GPA" for the Spring 2017 semester at WVU's Blue and Golden Globe awards.
A record-number 222 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher to earn 18Birdies All-Academic Team recognition. To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
Individual academic honors are expected to be announced next week.
